Discussion: Charlie's Angels (2019)

This is a thread to discuss the new Charlie’s Angels movie directed by Elizabeth Banks.

If anybody has seen it or wants to see it feel free to discuss it and ask questions in the thread. This is the plot of the movie taken from the google search result:

“A brilliant scientist invents Calisto – a sustainable energy source that will revolutionize the way people use power. But when Calisto falls into the wrong hands, the Angels must retrieve it before it can be used as a weapon of mass destruction.”

And here is the trailer:

I watched the trailer only. Wasn’t impressed. More like a combo of catwalks and cringe quotes.

I don’t like Bank’s whole approach, where she is stating that “movie is full with sneaky feminist ideas” and that “this movie is not for men”, and then “surprised pikachu face” when it fails miserably. Men don’t have a problem with women movies, judging by the success of many of them. She didn’t make a movie to bring something new into the industry and culture. She made it to promote her ideology, and most people couldn’t care less about her political views. Movies are made to entertain or educate. Doubt this movie does either.

Plus she took a good movie and reworked it for no other reason, than to promote her views. Sneaky my a*s.

On the other hand, it’s nice to see Kristen using various face expressions xD Was pleasantly surprised.

I think it’s absolutely disappointing tbh. The original was thousand times better than this one! Not gonna waste my money on the new Charlie’s Angels.

I totally agree.

They did the same thing with Ghostbusters, the second movie in 1989 was better than that version!

I feel like they could have done so much better with it

Really.

And I see colorism is back at it again… they really could’ve hired a dark-skinned actress for the black woman. sigh

Haven’t seen the movie , but I’m still a bit confused to why they made a song named “Don’t call me angel” for a movie called Charlie’s Angels…

The trailer isn’t very interesting. It’s like they’re trying too hard to make it cool.

^This!

Movies or any piece of media has a goal or story to tell. If you concentrate more on what you want people to get rather than the approach, it will lack and end up a failure. This happens a lot with movies like this that try too hard to do the “look at me, I’m a WOMAN and I’m so EMPOWERING!” It’s like they forget the most important thing–What is the character without the political messages? What makes them a person without you having to prove a point? :woman_shrugging:t4: Let’s be honest, what are Charlie’s Angels without the overuse of the “sneaky feminist ideas?” I haven’t watched the movie but based on those trailers, I see nothing else about them. And since it failed badly, I wouldn’t be surprised if there wasn’t.
