Discussion: Gua Sha

What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is a form of traditional Chinese medicine in which a stone is dragged across your skin, usually on your face.

The tool typically looks like this (this one is made out of Jade but they can be made from a variety of stones):

What does it do?
The benefits of Gua Sha include:

  • Promoting lymphatic drainage
  • Reducing puffiness
  • Relieving facial and jaw tension
  • Aiding in circulation, giving skin a glow
  • Firming and lifting the face over time

How to use it:

  1. Start with a clean face and apply a facial oil or serum - this will help the Gua Sha tool glide across your skin
  2. Keep the tool flat against your face and begin with the forehead, scraping upwards from the eyebrows to the hairline
  3. Move to the cheeks and scrape outwards from the crease of the nose to the ear
  4. Move to the jawline and scrape from the chin to the ear using the end of the tool with the two curves. Gently massage the tool into the ear to release any tension
  5. For the under-eye area, apply very light pressure and scrape from the inner corner of the eye to the temple

I’ve heard of this, just never knew the name.

I’ll admit I haven’t used mine since coming home from school, but when I was at school I used to use my gua sha at night to help me relax and for a bit of self-care while studying for exams and finishing my culminating projects

I have a rose quartz gua sha tool that I bought at Sephora and I use it with a rose face oil that I bought at Shopper’s drug mart
(I typically used it before I washed my face so that I could wash off any excess oil with my face cleanser)
