Discussion: How To Write A Good Cliche

I’m no expert on writing, but I have seen plenty of cliche Episode stories.
I’ve also often talked about cliche tropes a lot when I’ve done my little reviews of Episode featured stories. I used to think that to be a good writer you should just completely avoid these cliches but after watching a couple writing videos I have a kind of new perspective.
The problem with a lot of these stories is that the writers don’t seem to be putting in any effort. Which shows in the story that they’re just using the same tropes over and over again to appease an audience.

I think that if you put effort into your stories and you’re very passionate about them and you want to use cliche tropes then honestly you’re probably writing a good cliche. Because what a lot of these cliche stories lack is effort and passion. Write what you want, honestly. Write what you want to read and makes you passionate.

(obviously avoid things like incest and stuff like that guys lol- don’t use toxic cliches/tropes)

Anyway, thoughts?

You can always write a good cliche if you add your own twist in the story. For example, ina high school story, the MC is the popular girl and the antagonist is a nerd. And then, the nerd did a makeover and stole the MC’s spotlight. Put yourself in other’s shoes and write it in a new perspective. That way, a tons of fresh ideas suddenly pop in your head.

Another thing is the personality. Perhaps the popular girl is the nicest girl in the whole school while the nerd is someone who holds a grudge easily. Different personalities can add a whole new twist to your story.

Story development is as important as well. Be detaied as possible, we don’t want to read stuff that we think you’re put much effort on. Why would we waste our time if we can read something better. Story and character development must be very strong and you have to know your characters very well.

Yeah, that’s pretty much it. In a nutshell, just write something fresh.

i write “somewhat” cliche stories. with romance its kinda hard to make it unquie because its well romance and centered around a certain thing… love. i feel as if you can make the story interesting and different from other “cliche” romance stories that’ll really separate your story from theirs.

Honestly own how cliché it is. If you’ve ever seen Jane The Virgin, the show makes fun of its self. It’s meta, and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

I think the main thing is character development. Most cliches on episode have dry characters without dimension.
