Discussion: Is there a difference between diary & journal?

Funny when I talk to someone, I tell them that I am writing in my diary and sometimes I say journal. Do you own a diary/journal? How do you start off these entries? Do you add pictures in your diary?

I had to change the topic thing on here as this is related to writing.

I’m not sure of the semantics really but when I kept a diary for my mental health and such for use by my therapist I’d start it the way it’s often shown in media.

Date: day/month/year
Event
Mental state

Description of event.

It was all very professional

I don’t know, I usually call it diary because I’m always starting off the entry with

Date
Time
Dear diary,
insert random entry

Basically like this

Monday 29th April 2019
9.00pm
Dear diary,
Words cannot describe how pissed off I am with the world

Dear diary is a good format, so I don’t think there’s any issue with calling it a diary? @ShanniiWrites is the expert in this but it could be a British vs American English thing.

I dunno though >.<

I wish I knew :joy: I say “diary” and I know most people around me do. Maybe it is a British English thing. Time to do my research!

For myself, I’d use diary for entries meant to be kept to myself and journal would be entries for others to be able access and read.

Hahah I usually say diary as well. Maybe it’s a British thing. Do you remember in primary school, we used to have this lesson called “Dear diary” where we have to write about what did we do over the holidays or weekends? That used to be a fun lesson.

Lol why am I talking like I knew you even though we have not met in person? But you get what I mean.

You can talk to me like that if you want! I don’t mind

Alright cool  but yeah, don’t we remember the lessons like that? We even draw pictures as well to show our teachers.

I remember :eyes: I was such a teacher’s pet and I loved writing since then, so I annoyed everyone in class :joy:

Girl same :joy::joy::joy::joy: but I was a trouble maker for sure just because my dad worked (he still works there) in the primary school I went to.

Hahaha! I bet you could get away with so much!

Yeah. I know you already knew that I have PTSD but because of how vengeful I was I always knocked the kids out but got away with it because teachers knew it was for self defence.

Seems like a British thing, I remember it too. Pages of “and then I played this game” followed by pictures of said game

I don’t remember playing that game lol

i don’t know why lmao, but i think of a diary as more personal and for things you don’t really want to share with many others, and like a journal is for keeping track of things in a preferred format. not sure lol, just something i’ve got in my brain!

I think there’s a difference

Diary = Record your life, feelings, personal secrets :green_heart:

Journal = Record something not necessarily private :blue_heart:

I own a diary/journal that I occasionally write in when I’m feeling really upset about the day’s events and I have to let off steam. It’s a good way to calm down for me because I’m letting out what I feel.

I wish I had the patience to write in a diary/journal. I used to use this website called penzu.com as a diary, but I always wrote for a day or two and then forgot about it, or stopped halfway through a story because I lost interest.
