Discussion: Language Dialects

A dialect is a variety of a language that is distinguishable by its grammar, pronunciation or vocabulary and is typically spoken by a specific group of people from a specific location.

  • Do you speak any language dialects?
  • If yes, which ones?

Just in the region that I live in, there are at least 4 different dialects of German and in school, we all kinda learned to understand them and switch to other dialects if necessary. I think I understand a lot more dialects than I can speak myself but I also barely ever try do speak another dialect lately

Here’s something that I’ve noticed specifically with Google and the Canadian English dialect. Google doesn’t recognize Canadian English as a language (their languages list only has British or American), so I’m often forced to choose between the two when writing in Google Docs. However, recently I’ve noticed that YouTube will default itself to Canadian French because location-wise, it knows I’m in Canada and there’s no Canadian English option, so it’s just defaulting to the first thing that says ‘Canada’.
