There are some parts which are kinda inaccurate in terms of the setting, and the costumes, but I think it’s just mediocre, I can tell that they put some effort to it, but not too defailed. Not too outstanding but definitely bearable to watch.
Fun fact, they initially wanted a white actress to act as Mulan.
I saw it, it was bland, one dimensional, missing everything that made the original so emotional and heartfelt while adding elements that took away from the empowering message of the animated movie. It was a miss but I don’t expect much more from these live action Disney adaptations so it’s not like it was a let down.
I’m not saying I looked for it on Ololo and watched it on a free streaming site because that would be stealing and I am a child of the lord, all I’m saying is there are ways to watch it without premium access. That’s Ololo.to if you were wondering what site I didn’t use to watch Mulan without giving in to corporate greed.
It might have bern an excellent reinterpretation, were it not so heavy-handed and, well, Disney-fied. Mulan’s unnecessary changes and additions both take up the runtime and weaken its protagonist, resulting in a live action Disney movie that feel bland, one dimensional, and lacks the magic of the animated one. It’s not the worst movie I’ve ever watched, but I don’t particularly like it.
Also, I heard that they were trying to cast a white person as Mulan which… why? I fail to understand the real purpose behind this movie. Then again, I’m not a professional critic.
The show is istorically inaccurate and it seemed like they didn’t put much effort to portray the show as accurate as possible. I’d be fine if there are a couple of mistakes, but some of them are so basic.
Example, why tf are the concubines walking around?
And there are a lot of things (weapons, coustumes, accessories etc.) which didn’t exist in that era but hundreds/a thousand years after.
The original Mulan is also inacurate in terms for historical aspects. If you’re wondering, “it’s just a disney movie”. No. It was from a Chinese folk tale and and disney is the worst version of Mulan. Even a 1939 version portrayed it better. But I’d rather not talk about it.
This is what happens when they’re having these kind of people in their production team. Zero knowledge. Absolutely clueless.
Why would you fight without protection? Why? Just why?
Also, if you’re wondering why Mushu was removed, it’s because it’s offensive to chinese. Personally, I don’t mind it though.
“Obviously, Mushu is a beloved character and one of the most memorable of the animated film. It turns out that the traditional Chinese audience did not particularly think that was the best interpretation of the dragon in their culture. That the dragon is a sign of respect and of strength and power and sort of using it as a silly sidekick did not play well with a traditional Chinese audience.” Jason Reed.
However, I don’t see know a witch would make up to that.
In conclusion, Mulan is a boring movie that could’ve done better. They could’ve made the movie like the original Disney Mulan movie or written it better if they want to make it “historically accurate”, which they did miserably.
It’s not lmao. If the animated version is 1, then this version is 1.01.
If the movie was better would you have felt the same way about the inaccuracies? Also did it matter to you that the lead actress supported the police brutality in Hong King or that they filmed in a region where the government is literally committing genocide and took special care to thank government propaganda organizations that are in part responsible for committing that genocide in the credits? Did the last half feel like nationalist propaganda to you? I read a lot of the problematic aspects of the film as Disney not caring about Chinese viewers, or any viewers really, so much as they cared about pleasing the government to have access to the market - putting out a mediocre product doesn’t matter if you’re going to make millions in the third largest consumer market in the world anyway. I’m really curious to hear what you think as a Chinese consumer, do you feel like this movie was sincerely trying to accurately reflect Chinese culture at the time it was set and failed or was it all just a marketing strategy?
If the plot was very interesting and engaging, I can look over them, as long as they don’t portray stereotypes in the story. However, because there were a lot remakes which are better, it’s hard to achieve especially when they want to change the real folk tale.
I’m neutral about this.
Partially.
They chose to change the plot and want to make it “historically accurate” to please the Chinese viewers. But we all can already tell in the trailer that is was historically inaccurate. And, no Mushu? Why would people wtach it for the witch? Fyi, young viewers didn’t really care about the animated Mulan being offensive, because it’s their childhood. So, people who have watched it would express their thoughts, which led to lesser people watching it, so it’s an epic flop if you want to say it’s a market strategy.
They could’ve just remained the original plot and spend more time on historically accuracy.
There are four main aspects on why Chinese dislike disney Mulan:
