Discussion: Painted nails/dyed hair and school rules

Bump.

My school didn’t allow bright-coloured nail-polish, but I’m glad they never had a rule on how long your nails could be, like my sister’s high school did. I think these rules are stupid. They don’t distract students from learning. We were allowed dyed-hair, as long as it was a natural colour (I think?)

In my opinion, students should be allowed to dye their hair whatever colour they want. The only thing that’s going to distract students is someone getting sent to the principal’s office.

  • Did your school have any ridiculous rules?
  • What rules did people complain about, but actually made sense?

When I was in school, we were allowed to have acrylic nails and wear nail polish, but I work at a private school that’s very strict about hair and nails. Nail polish isn’t allowed, nor unnatural hair colors like neon green, pink, etc. Face piercings aren’t allowed, either.

As for acrylic nails, I’ve been wearing them for years, and I’m very comfortable with them as they stay on for about a month as opposed to nail polish which starts chipping and peeling within three days (or less). Gel nails are also pretty awesome but they aren’t as common where I live, and not too many people know how to do them.

Bump!

Honestly, teachers need to stop making such a huge deal out of painted nails and dyed hair. Let students be themselves.

I rarely paint my nails, because I always mess them up when I do. I’m surprised some schools don’t allow it. I don’t see a problem with it. They look nice! My school allows it. They also allow hair dye. I personally don’t think it’s right for a school to tell someone what to do with their hair and nails. Painted nails and colored hair are harmless. :woman_shrugging:t4:

And your nails look nice btw! (I know this is an old topic, but just wanted to say that).

It’s kinda funny cause I’ve got so much better at painting my nails since that photo.

Okay, so the only thing I do when it comes to my appearance is showering, brushing my teeth and hair and put on some very standard clothes, jeans and a sweater :joy: Dress codes has never been an issue for me personally but most of them are ridiculous. I don’t get why there would be a rule against paining one’s nails and dying one’s hair. In one of the schools I went to you were aloud to dye your hair but only in natural hair colors lol. And what was even crazier was that they didn’t like that boys had long hair so they forced them to put their hair up in a tie and that was just humiliating. I remember that the particular teacher got a serious scolding by one parent.

Personally, I think that what a student does to their hair or nails is their business and theirs alone. I don’t think my school has anything about hair or nail colour in our dress code because it’s never brought up in the many presentations from the school about it.

Ahhh I saw this title and I knew this was my time to rant about my school!!

My school hates painted nails, dyed hair, piercings (that weren’t single lobe and studs only), short skirts, jeans in sixth form(??) and way too many more things. And I thought (/still think) it was so hypocritical since literally every teacher wore hoop earrings and had painted nails.

Should pained nails be allowed in school? Yes. When everyone in the school is wearing the exact same school uniform every day and being made to look the exact same as everyone else, why can’t we be allowed to embrace ourselves / our style in something as small as our nails?

My high school was… I would say ok with that…
The only thing we couldn’t wear were ripped jeans and really short skirts.
But in college you can do whatever you want, they don’t care at all. Especially if you go to the Academy of arts… I’ve seen some weird things

that sounds like wanting to leave us defenseless but ok school directing boomers

cute nails btw
i go to american public school where u can do whatever u want as long as it doesnt turn on the gym teacher
ion paint my nails much, and have never dyed my hair (me mum dun let me but eh) but i think its rad

It’s also pretty sexist, I’ve always had pretty long nails naturally, still do and I painted them black when I was in third year. The girls would get sh*t for it, but I never even got a second glance

Yeah my ex used to do his nails too but they never said a word

What was the weirdest thing so far? :eyes::green_heart:

I don’t think how a student’s appearance can affect what they learn at school. It’s none of the teacher’s business if the want to dye their hair or wear nail polish. They are here to ‘learn’ and if it’s not offending anyone, then it’s no problem.
