Discussion: Should Free Art be Accepted No Matter the Quality?

There has been a situation going on about in the Episode community (Mainly Instagram) about a specific group not really treating a customer well when she asked if they could redo her an art she requested. I’ll send a little screenshot of some of the things they have said.

Now, I wanted to see your opinions on this. To me, I feel they’re saying that it being a free art service, they don’t have to make it good for the individual or to the persons liking. Just get the work done with very lack of communication in the process and give it to the person, without any issues. Do you agree that people who make free art shouldn’t have to be obligated to respect the request or what the person asked for to their liking? Or you disagree and think no matter the price of the art, the requester should be heard and listened?

State your opinions below! I’d love to see what you all have to say.

When it comes to art, both the artist and the customer should definitely communicate with each other. That’s how it works in the real world.

I think they should do what the person requested and update the art because that’s their job, making art free doesn’t mean you have to make messy edits/drawings, like should we pay to have at least a good edit now?

It’s really hard to tell since there are always two sides, and most of the time they are both right and wrong at the same time.

I think the requester should look into requirements. I suppose some/most of the groups let you fill the form, and then roll with it, with artists making the art based on their own understanding of the request, which is of course subjective, without contacting the requester This might be the case with this request (I saw this drama on Insta too). I think this is absolutely acceptable concept if it’s a free art.

People also have to understand why free art is free. Most of the time it’s because no one would buy it. Sad but true. So don’t get your expectations high and expect a masterpiece, or even a slightly decent work for free. If you want the art that would meet your wildest dreams, while asking for changes in the process - pay for the art. It doesn’t matter if the artist is beginner or not, and what is the quality of the art. They still spend a LOT of time on their art. So you bitching about it not being the way you want it is just retarded.

I mean, if it’s free, then I think it would be entitled behaviour to get angry if someone can’t put in any more hours than they currently are.

But at the same time, I think this kinda thing needs to be stated when you take requests in the first place

Imo the art service is making sense. When you request art you need to be specific otherwise the artist won’t know what you want. It’s not fair to make the artist(s) redo a whole piece based on what you failed to include on the request form (unless they’ve completely ignored your specific requirements).

As for free art, beggars can’t be choosers. Not just edits but creating in general takes time. Free, high quality art produced in a short time span sounds great but it’s not realistic. If it’s free, it will have less quality put into it in order to meet the deadline or it will take longer to make up for the fact that the artist will technically “gain” nothing so there’s no point in rushing the work.

Some people do art as a job so they need something in return. This could be a shout-out or simply being credited but exposure doesn’t pay bills. It’s rare to get high quality, free AND quickly made art. It’s not realistic to expect all 3 and you’re not owed all 3 either. :woman_shrugging:t5:

As they are providing a free service they don’t actually have any obligations :woman_shrugging: however, ethically they should state the fact they are going to be making their own interpretation of the request or if the customer wants anything specific again this should be specified.

Tbh though it feels like it is only really the artist themselves that loses something, like yeah the customer may not use the art but they can go and find more or decide whether or not they actually need the art or if they can make do without it. The artist on the other hand spends time and effort making the art only to be told it’s not to the persons liking despite it being free.

Because it is free the customer loses no money. The artist loses time. The artist gains nothing, the customer gains an art piece. Does this mean that the customer has to be satisfied with a piece even if it isn’t to the standard they expected just because the artist took time to make it for them?

The answer is harsh but no

The artist needs to state the fact that the art may not be what the customer expects. If they don’t state this then I could understand why the customer would be mad (although they shouldn’t get aggressive they should at least remain respectful). If they do state this then that makes things different, did the artist provide previous examples of work? If the answer is yes then the customer should be able to accept the fact that the work they recieve will probably look like that. If the answer is no then the customer won’t be prepared and may respond badly depending on what their expectations were, therefore the artist needs to state that the work probably won’t be what the customer envisions and if there is anything specific that needs to be added then that needs to be stated before the piece is made.

Honestly I am not sure what to think about this specific situation. But in my opinion the customer has the responsibility of describing what they want as precise as possible. As artist it’s your job to make it as similar as requested as possible. However I think really whenever someone asks for a redo it depends on multiple things. Firstly did the artist made what was requested and secondly is it at least at their average level and not rushed or something like that. I think in those 2 cases it’s okay to ask for a redo, but still you should be respectful to the artist if they say they won’t make changes. Especially it being free most people do it for fun and you just can’t expect the art to be amazing and most free artists already have lots of other requests waiting. However I do think as artist you more or less have a moral responsibility to redo it if you know it’s easily changeable or some extra work could make the customer happy. But in the end it’s the artists choice when we are talking about free works.

Personally I find it really rude to complaiun over something there is free. and also they show exampels if you did not like what they make you should not ask.

but what the artist say is really rude.they offer to do it so they should do it good. if they dont wanna put work into something for free then dont give it away for free.

and also when doing art its good to ask while doing the art. personally I send a sketch before I colour it. so I can know if I need to change something.

I think that the artist has to respect the wishes of the person who requested the art and try to do their best. It was their own choice to create art for free so they should do what the promised.
But on the other hand the requestor should also understand that the art might not be very good if the artist offers it for free. And if the want the artist to make something a certain way they should tell them beforehand, not when the art piece is already finished. The artist spent their time on the art piece and it’s understandable that they won’t be happy if they get told to change part of it, because all their work was for nothing.
The most important thing in such a situation is the communication between the artist and the requestor. The artist should ask about the details if they aren’t sure, but the requestor should also provide as much info as possible from the beginning. :eyes::sparkles:

  1. The artist should provide their examples to the requester, so they can make their decision clearly, and make sure the artist isn’t sketchy.

  2. The requester must provide sufficient information to the artist to avoid bigger problems, because there arr requesters who don’t provide enough information and ended up wanting the artist to redo their work.

The requester is suppose to decide wisely before requesting. Then, just let the artist do the work. Correcting a little section is fine, just don’t ask the artist to redo it. If the artist gives you weird art, then just spread the word.

If you’re an artist who does art for free, then you’re too kind. However, beware of these type of people:

  • Art trolls. Those who disappear after requesting so you’ll feel little of yourself.
  • People who gives you insufficient information and ask you to redo their work because it’s not what they imagined
  • People who can’t make up their mind. At first, they ask you for realism, and after showing them your work, they ask for a cartoon style.
  • Art thieves. They sell your free art.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, DON’T ASK THE ARTIST TO GIVE YOU FREE ART JUST BECAUSE THEY KNOW YOU. IT’S LIKE YOUR BOSS IS PAYING YOU TO DO NOTHING JUST BECAUSE THEY KNOW YOU.
