Discussion: Should There Be More Focus on Music in Schools?

I was wondering, do you guys think it’s important to focus more on music in schools? I remember when I was in primary school I maybe had some music once a month but that’s it… I feel like learning music is important for kids so I personally would love to see music getting more important. Even tho I can also see why people would think it shouldn’t be the main focus and something that should be done at home, but not every parent is able to pay for music lessons outside of school.

I think that there should be more focus on all forms of art in school. Music in particular has been proven to help kids with math and other subjects, yet a lot of schools don’t have any music program at all.

Absolutely! In primary school we had a fair amount of music activities. Whenever your class did assembly you’d sing a song all together at the end plus we sang the prayers most of the time so that counts. We had a recorder club plus we all got music lessons ranging from keyboard/piano, clarinet, guitar and violin in Year 5 & 6.

Learning music is fun and extra-curriculars look good on CVs (all the CV and uni stuff is a big deal when you reach sixth form/college). Creative subjects are so important. I wish they were prioritized more.

I think it would be fun if schools in the Netherlands had more after school clubs and or other activities you can join if you wanted to focus on music. But I personally wouldn’t want more than one mandatory music class a week.

Because I had a mandatory choir class during Highschool besides our regular music class which was once a week (and was also greatly disliked). It was a real mess and a lot of people in my class including me decided to skip that class half way through the school year. Because nobody besides 2 or 3 people actually sang in that choir ,so the teacher wouldn’t know/care whether you were there or not.

Yeah I wish music was given more attention in schools, it was one of my favourite things but because I didn’t want to do it at GCSE I wasn’t allowed to remain in the clubs I was in which was really annoying. Not to mention the fact that not to toot my own horn some of the kids who did fo that exam act like they have more music talent than me. Which is horse poop.

Also my Dad didn’t let me do the GCSE because in his mind he is the only one with any musical talent and it wouldn’t be worth me doing.

But what I say is that I know how to read/write music. Play instruments and sing. So I’m all good :joy:.

It would be nice to get rid of the stereotype of the qualification not being worth anything.

Only if you want to do music as a subject in school but honestly I don’t think it should be more focused on, it does calm me down tho.

I think so, but then again I’m a biased flute player :stuck_out_tongue:

Music always helps, it improves a lot of things in your life, and I’d love for someone to specialize in flutes for my school. I never know if mine is broken or it’s just me.

My doctor actually told me to keep playing bass because playing an instrument is genuinely good for your mental health

You can usually tell I’m not okay by whether or not I played bass that day

Ack in my school we have to do the Performing Arts subjects, the big trio not everyone’s happy about…

  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Music!

We had a lesson of each subject for every week. I mean, I guess that’s enough right? I don’t know…
Honestly school is just to explore all the options you have for a life-time job, and learn some social skills on the way too!
I can’t really say anything about the school I go to because every subject has a fair amount of time in my schedule.

BUT WHAT I CAN SAY…

IS THAT PRIMARY SCHOOLS NEED TO UP THEIR GAME!
I only remember having like… 6 lessons of Music roughly per year. And that’s hardly enough to spark anyone’s interest in the subject. Also I think you should make instrument lessons free… Okay maybe for the first few lessons just to see if they actually want to do it or nah.

But yeah, schools should put more focus in music. Even though not everyone’s gonna work in that industry, there’s a lot more creativity you can get in a music lesson than a science, maths and literature lesson combined.

I think schools should focus on music more, but once you finish primary school you should have a choice whether to continue music or not.

I dreaded music class in junior high school, but some people like it. Students should have a choice. :white_heart:
