Discussion: Sick of Authors Looking For Reasons Why Not Include Diversity šŸ˜’

Thatā€™s cool that you have practicing Christian characters! Religion is definitely not shown enough.

I absolutely loved the afro hair in ink and I thought the girl i made with it was gorgeous!
In limelight, itā€™s not as good, but the big curly one is nice. Can that be used as afro?

Which big curly one? It can be used as an Afro but it matters by the hair texture you want for the character. If itā€™s Kinky then you shouldnā€™t use that one and use the LL actual Afro.

Another thing, if you want to make ethnic characters, it always best to learn about hair textures and styles.

I get that the hair topic has been a big thing in the past. But to me, I donā€™t particularly consider it a lot. I use hairstyles from the portal, that I like, on all characters. I wonā€™t use a style that I donā€™t like. Purely because some, especially dreadlocks styles for example arenā€™t always nicely made.
So I donā€™t care for them in my stories.

Characters donā€™t have to be all natural anyway, with these days in reality, where people do all sorts of things with their hair. Even pocā€™s can in some cases have average hairstyles. Some wear wigs, some have weaves, some dye it, some have it chemically straightened etc.
So although it is something to consider if you want to keep it rooted in facts. Itā€™s, to me at least, not a big issue, where they can only have ethnic hair. Pocā€™s are still a beautiful addition to a story as itā€™s natural. But make them beautiful in your own way too. Donā€™t just make every single one the same by putting an afro on them. They are unique and beautiful in their individual ways just as the rest of characters are. So style them differently too.

Nice to know Iā€™m not the only one who kinda hates the limelight dredlocks!

Yeah, thereā€™s no way for me to pleasantly enjoy the look of worms coming out of their skulls.

Or would be nice to see, in the future, that episodes art department can give those types of style some more texture and fit nicer.

Yeah. The OG dreadlocks look terrible but also donā€™t make sense. How are they curved at the bottom? Why does the dreadlock start in the scalp?! I think Episodeā€™s making improvements with the newer dreads because they look a lot better.

Fingers crossed it continues progressing then. Or Iā€™m giving them all the same hair :joy::joy::joy:

Excuses, excuses, excuses. They are just lazy, thinking since most people find white people attractive, so why not just make the story with all white characters?

The ā€œbecause Iā€™m unfamiliar with their cultureā€ excuse is the worse. There are so many people who are sick of seeing a non-diversed story. They are willing to help you and asking them a few questions wouldnā€™t hurt. Plus, you can interview people from a huge variety of cultures, which is most likely more than enought than what you need.

Iā€™m going to bump this a little because the next blog post on my (huge, 36-post long) list is POCs in Fantasy Stories!

Iā€™m going to be talking about how there is no excuse. Medieval fantasy isnā€™t the only fantasy people write. A Middle Earth-style world has magic in it, but somehow people think that brown people is too unlike Europe? There was a minority group of black people in medieval Europe. Etc etc.

So it would be awesome if I could get some ideas!

I will never force someone to make their cast diverse. However, Iā€™m not going to pretend the excuses are good enough, either. If you donā€™t want to make your cast diverse, own that fish.

The excuses are never good enough in fantasy as a matter of fact. Why is skin colour such a big deal that you need so many characters to be white? Surely it doesnā€™t matter enough in a different, fantastical world

I kind of understand the ā€œVampires need to be whiteā€ argument even though itā€™s not a good excuse.

I mean itā€™s not a good excuse. Vampires are magically reincarnated mystical bloodsuckers who represent the rich classes in gothic fiction. Why does their skin colour matter? Because they represent rich people?

And the science argument is pretty simply debunked by simply saying: What the actual fcuk is scientific about mystically rising from the dead to suck teenage girls?

I donā€™t get it. Whatā€™s stopping a brown person from being a vampire?

Exactly!

Also why are the werewolves always black?

I think thatā€™s actually quite a new phenomenon. Looking back on 80s films, werewolves tended to be white, too. And in Buffy in the 90s-00s
