Since this week’s theme is sci-fi, I thought I’d spark up a conversation about two of the most popular sci-fi franchises. Star Wars and Star Trek. Does anyone have any strong opinions on which they prefer? Or are you impartial? Personally, I’ve watched and enjoyed both.
Star trek every time
Star Wars isn’t sci-fi
So Star Trek, since you only mentioned one sci-fi property
Neither
thankyou
Did someone say Star Wars?
STAR WARS ALL THE WAYY!
yes it is
Science fiction is a genre of speculative fiction that typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life.
yes, star trek is a little more sci-fi than star wars… star wars is still a sci-fi
Yes, speculative fiction. It’s romanticised, sure, but just because something has space ships does not make it science fiction.
Star Wars is fantasy. Magic space wizards who duel with laser swords are not science fiction Not to mention the story structure and thematic throughline are veeery traditional fantasy, and the elements of science that are there in Star Wars are completely glossed over because they’re just there to make the scenery more unique.
Replace the extra-terrestrial life in Star Wars with elves and dwarves. Replace the spaceships with airships and it’ll still be the same story, a fantasy story. It just wouldn’t have the unique setting it does.
Replace the aliens in Star Trek with that, the world-building and the spaceships? The story would be completely different. The new frontier wouldn’t be space, the Federation wouldn’t be interGalactic. It would just end up being a pretty dumb innaccurate historical fiction
There is also a line between fantasy and Sci-fi!
Yes but there are other aspects. It’s honestly more of an adventure movie. Its Sci-Fi/Adventure…
Not really because Star Trek is legit just more extra-terrestrial. I’ll give it that. It has more aliens and stuff but it does have the same idea as star wars. Space ships and fighting
Fantasy films are films that belong to the fantasy genre with fantastic themes, usually magic, supernatural events, mythology, folklore, or exotic fantasy worlds.
This is the definition of fantasy. This is not at all star wars XD
its ok though, my opinion is irrelevant anyways
Wrong, your opinion is always relevant!
No, see, Star Wars is a very intimate story of family, transcending one’s birthright, doing good and understanding one’s self through meditation and confronting fears and all that stuff. The Hero’s Journey and everything, it’s very much the Skywalker’s story, the story could very well be told in a different setting and has been, many times. The Death Star could very easily be a fortress or a castle run by an evil Empire in a medieval fantasy.
Star Trek is specifically about the human race using technological advancements achieved through science over the decades to explore the final frontier: space. The setting informs the story, it doesn’t in Star Wars.
Like good and evil, the light side and the dark, and the conflict and tug-of-war between them
The force
One black knight clad in dark armour using magic to destroy a whole race of space wizards?
Like Jedi, Sith, and the way of the Mandalorians?
Like C-3PO making his actual travels and stories basically folklore to the Ewoks, or Ben Kenobi being this mysterious recluse in the hills who everyone thinks is a kooky old crazy person who’s lived thousands of years and probably eats children or something (Though the books aren’t canon anymore, tbf)
Like Tattooine, Naboo, Mustafar, etc.
mk
but honestly i could care less ab the genre lmfao… i still prefer star wars lol
ok true
Also I don’t like Folklore being added as a baseline for fantasy, most high fantasy stories don’t even have their own mythology because people can’t grasp world building
I prefer Star Wars too! I love Star Wars, I just get a little annoyed because the intention was never for it to be science fiction
the ewoks are so cute tho
Which lead to it coming under fire from people who thought it was bad sci-fi
But in reality it’s space fantasy
mmm true. but I mean its disney so like, what do u expect
Disney didn’t always own Star Wars though. George Lucas created it.
George Lucas specifically wanted it to be cheesy superhero fantasy, so he didn’t quite manage what he wanted.
But yeah, people thought it was bad sci-fi like @anon68003072 said, which is why this debate is wild. Star Trek is great sci-fi, Star Wars is one of the most unique and interesting fantasy settings ever made
