It needed a Malcom, Malcom wasn’t out there gatekeeping
I feel the need to establish that when I say “white” I am speaking to a very specific group upholding oppressive systems they’ve rigged to stay at the top of. A group that has a monopoly on economic and political power. I do not mean all Caucasian people. We are talking about the white establishment, white culture as in white as the default group. Check out How the Irish Became White by Noel Ignatiev for further reading.
Ohhh, I think Malcom certainly woulda been but I can neither confirm nor deny I didn’t know the man. I meant he wouldn’t affirm the viability of tip toeing around white fragility as a tactic for social change. I think there are too many factors working against this dissemination of information theory. Capitalism for instance, upheld by the white establishment, is in direct conflict with the social and economic mobility of marginalized groups. Capitalism depends on the school to prison pipeline, the buffoonery of the war on drugs, the hoarding of resources, the red lining of districts. Speaking softy so that we don’t frighten one another with ugly truths is not enough, hoping we can be resectable and enough of a good “other” to make people understand and not retreat or lash out the second they are uncomfortable is not enough.
If we’re talking about the establishment, then cultural appropriation is probably not the best discussion for this, as this is a term that encompasses all people
As you said, we don’t know the man, but I don’t think he’d be having a discussion as to whether white people should be allowed to wear dreads etc. That’s the thing. We might not need to tiptoe around white fragility, but completely disregarding it or acting like it won’t affect us will be the downfall when it comes to actual, long-lasting change. It is the truth that a lot of people on top experience white fragility, and if we don’t factor that in, we will antagonise them, which will work against us
So unless it’s violent revolution we’re looking for, we have to have some compassion and stop gatekeeping
