My parents and my teachers agreed that reading makes you more intelligent. We even had a survey at school that showed that the students with good grades also read a lot. But I’m not sure if that really means that reading makes you more intelligent 
It probably helps you to improve your writing and might be useful in language classes, but I’m not so sure about general intelligence.
