No no no, I didn’t mean INK!! I was talking about that style that they used in Pretty Little Liars, Clueless, and a couple of other stories before Limelight was released that had some features similar to LL.
That’s what I meant by Pre-Limelight. Not INK. I just used Pre-LL to describe it because it was never actually given a name.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Oh haha that makes sense.
I just thought u meant ink because a few people have asked me about one of my old stories and they didnt know what the style was called and it made me feel old even though it wasnt that long ago haha

I think there’s a difference between a terrible MC (like Mary Sue, or just annoying MC) and a purposefully written unlikeable MC anti-hero which can be interesting. There’s a tendance to like/appreciate/root for even against your better judgement make anti-heroes but dislike female ones, which I don’t get. I don’t think any of the ones on your list (but haven’t read them all), quite fit that criteria, but flawed characters are more fun in my opinion. Amazing essay by Roxane Gay here on this topic.

I think there are a few “unlikeable” but ultimately characters I find interesting in Episode, including:

  • Avery in Legally Clueless - she’s rich and spoiled but somehow still endearing
  • MC in Diary of a Troublemaker- she makes a lot of trouble, but is interesting
  • Elsie in The Wedding Buddies - she’s not sweet and cuddly but I still root for her
  • Savannah in Heart over Wheels - she has OCD, she’s always pulling away from the LI and happiness and yet, she’s someone I want to see win
  • Angie in I Wanna Be Evil - frustratingly she keeps trying to be bad and be an anti-heroine but she’s just so bad at it that it’s cute

That bothers me so much! We were actually talking about something similar (@ChaoticDeluge and I) last night – about Captain Marvel. That most of the traits people hate in her are either fine or actually likeable in men

Yesss I hate this double standard. I actually liked Captain Marvel, but I had low expectations, watched it on a plane, and generally love Brie Larson (and have since she was in The United States of Tara). If anything, I thought they made her too likeable and didn’t make her stubborn enough but that’s my unpopular opinion I guess :woman_shrugging:

My issues with it are more with the plot structure than her as a character. Because, you know, I don’t have a problem with arrogant women any more than I have a problem with arrogant men

Do you think it’s because men and women are attracted to different characteristics?
Is it bad that I want different characteristics in a bf than my bf wants in a gf?

I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all! But I don’t think we need to be valuing every MC based on what we find attractive in a potential partner. Especially in a film like Captian Marvel where there is no romance!

Finally!

To be honest, I’d find Dr Strange positively unlikeable in a romance film, regardless of him being a man. So why is it that a female action hero gets criticism like “she needs to smile more” when a male hero doesn’t!

I don’t think it’s bad per se, because each person is different, regardless of their gender. And personally, i think couples should complement each other and not be clones of one another (unless they want that, I guess).

But it sucks that positive masculine traits are seen as negative in women. Like a guy can be someone who takes charge but when a woman acts the same way she’s seen as bossy, a diminutive form of the same trait with much more negative connotations. And conversely, traits that are seen as feminine are usually “weaker” like women being caretakers and such… but Shannii May have a different view

I guess I just wanted her and Maria to be together romantically because I love a good romance and family reunion story haha

I completely agree! I think there were issues with Captain Marvel, but none of them — for me — are anything to do with the fact that she is arrogant or any of the other traits that would be seen as fine in any of her Male counterparts. It frustrates and disappoints me that people treat female superhero’s differently to Male
