Great question! So, this has to do with the whole defining trait about vampires being “unholy” more commonly seen in the 1800s. (as opposed to their modern defining trait being sexiness) So, water, especially running water such as rivers, streams, oceans, seas, etc, was seen as holy because it was cleaner and didn’t harbor disease, in a sense this makes it “pure”. So it has to do the older more religious beliefs about vampires.
