Mary "Mare" Darling

Mare snorted in response. The real reason why they didn’t have siblings was that their mom had died giving birth. Mare, however, decided to go with a more light-hearted response. Especially seeing as they still didn’t really know who Sora was. “Nah, I was already too much for my parents to handle.” Their eyes went wide as Sora explained what his brother could do. “Wait… seriously? You’re not f*cking with me, right? How does that even work? His body would have to break just to shapeshift… does he grow back his bones every time? Does it hurt?” Mare rolled their eyes at hearing about the crane. “Yeah, so what? It’s a lame bird. You, on the other hand, are a cool bird.”
They hadn’t meant to make him feel overwhelmed, though Mare hadn’t even noticed they had done so. They also hadn’t realized that Sora was 6’4". No wonder he had stuck out so much. Some days Mare really did question their eyesight. “You have hollow bones? I’m not an ornithologist, so I have no idea. But dude, you’re wingspan… I mean… what the actual hell?” Their hand continued to hang over Sora’s wings as they assumed the left was the one that had broke. Mare gently caressed Sora’s right-wing, listening to what Sora had asked, paying attention to each intricate detail on every feather.
Mare nodded despite failing and let out a sigh. They listened to everything Sora said, and carefully replied, “We can head to class. But first, I just want you to look at something.” That’s right, take two, baby. “Now this time, keep your eyes open. First, I want you to look around at everyone. That’s right, everyone around you. Look at how many people are hiding their faces, looking down as they walk, clingy to their bags. Then there are the people who are talking to each other? Are they looking at you? Are they even paying an ounce of attention? No. And I’ll tell you why. Most people are too caught up with how people might see them than they are with how other people look. Except for mean people. But I guarantee you that not everyone at this school is mean.”
