Monsters are fascinating,” Marc chimed, eyes boring into Aesthi’s black ones. It felt odd that xe wouldn’t show that much curiosity about the complexity of xys origins. He rested his arms against his own desk, pensive. It was all very ironic, in a way -the amount of curiosity they’d shown towards each other, when they didn’t even have the first understanding of their own origins. For Marc, however, asking about them was out of the question. There was a sort of primal fear at the very idea of asking his father about anything remotely risky that created a pit in his gut. Because he knew that no matter how useful you were at some point in time, no matter the love you once showed, family ties did not guarantee you stayed on the Erlking’s good side. Looking back at Aesthi, he wondered if that fear would be something xe knew. Xe called xys mother by her name, after all.

Any further reasoning, however, was completely clouded by the growing buzz in his ears as a student in front of him -and, to his surprise, the teacher- practically garbled out question after question. Goodness. Marc’s eyebrows dropped ever-so-slightly and a vein popped in his temple, although he did not show any further sign of annoyance out of respect.

“My,” he still lilted, very quietly, and smiling as ever. “What a curious classroom.” The teacher’s gaze across the classroom had caused him to notice several peculiar objects that had been scattered around, some even placed in the desk holders. Marc reached for a strange, stone-like material. Pressure seemed to have moulded the surface, leading him to think it was the sort of thing you only found in the depths of the ocean. Perhaps the teacher had even retrieved it themselves. Just then, a twinkle lit up in his eyes.

“Aesthi,” he crooned, face tilting back to the other student. “Can you turn into a monster, then?”
