[ Royal, or Roy’s upbringing has shaped a lot of his interests and personality. For example, the ability to remember and perform multiple tasks at once came from having so many lessons and responsibilities when he was younger. Royal, despite his immaturity, is responsible and trustworthy with an amazing memory. If you give him a task, and he agrees to it, he will complete it as fast as he can, and do a quality job as well. He values quantity and quality equally, and is a very hard worker, despite never having to lift a finger. He is organized, the opposite of a procrastinator, doing his best and giving his all, even when he feels worn out. He never says no to helping someone else, unless he feels it clashes with his moral compass, which is fairly strong. He is friendly and open, wanting to be friends with everyone, and disliking the feeling of having someone as his enemy. Still, if he gets a bad vibe from you or has a bad first impression, he will start to despise you, nitpicking and getting annoyed with every single thing you do. He has a good sense of humor, and enjoys making other people laugh, and laughing at other people’s jokes. He can be slightly carefree and definitely a bit immature, though he knows how to be serious when it is called for. He always seems to be extremely busy, managing several tasks at once, and never hesitating to add more to his plate. He does get stressed with it all, but he hides this so people admire him. ]
[ Extroverted and slightly overfriendly, Royal is definitely one to approach other people. He loves to make friends, and feels you can never have too many-though this doesn’t mean he doesn’t have an “inner circle” of closer friends. However, his closest friend is his elder sister, November. Even though he doesn’t see her as much as his guy friends, they are very close and tell each other everything. They “get” each other, and will always have each other’s back in any situation, whether the other is in the wrong or right. Yes, other people can achieve this level of trust with Royal-he’s a very loyal friend, and a good person to have on your side. He’s naturally defensive as well as logical, and will always help out his friends, no matter the time or the situation. However, in the end, Royal will always choose November over you, and will get mad if someone tries to criticize or insult her. Royal is opinionated and biased, and though he is smart, it is hard for him to form an unbiased opinion, since his own are so strong. He’s passionate about activism and can be slightly argumentative and defensive, though he tries to keep things as friendly and casual as possible-he is not mean-spirited or a bully in any way. He is one with many things he is passionate about. He loves collecting artifacts and things from the past, and also likes fossils. He is also obsessed with gemstones and geology, and is never seen without any jewelry. ]
[ Royal was never allowed to date, but he’s still a very thoughtful and romantic person who is interested in dating. He loves to give gifts, and he loves receiving them almost as much. He can come off as a bit desperate for a relationship at times for how far he is willing to go, and if he develops a crush on you, he’ll do whatever it takes to impress you and get your attention. Though he is very attentive and a good match, he can be slightly clingy, as if he’s slightly afraid to lose someone’s interest by not doing enough. He develops crushes very easily, and it can be slightly obvious. Royal is a forgiving person who is willing to make compromises and exceptions quite often. Though Royal’s life might seem perfect and simple on the outside, he has his secrets too-secrets he’d do almost anything to keep hidden from his parents. He’s protective of them, and gets anxious and upset if he feels someone has found out or is close to finding out. If he ever found someone he was interested in being with, it would just have to be another one of his secrets. He hides his true feelings as often as he can, because he doesn’t want to be seen as weak or imperfect. He doesn’t like to tell people about the negatives of his life, except November. ]
|| biography ||
[ tw : homophobia, violence (physical fight and non-fatal stab) ]
[ Royal was born early in the year, about a year after his elder sister, November was born. He was the firstborn son of Crispin and April, and the whole kingdom was overjoyed, celebrating his birth for weeks. However, when Royal was only one year old, the King and Queen made a slightly unconventional decision that stirred a bit of controversy in the kingdom-as November was their firstborn child, despite being female, she would be first in line to inherit the throne. Some agreed and supported the decision, some were quite against it. As the decision was made so early in Royal’s life, he grew up knowing it was unlikely he would ever become king of his own kingdom. But, he was okay with that. He knew his parents were working hard to find him a suitable match, so someday he would be able to rule. He knew they only wanted the best for him. Besides, he had all of the kingdom’s love. He was quite popular with the kingdom citizens, people named their own babies after him, dressed their babies like him. His sweet and excited personality put a smile on everyone’s face, and he was considered a joy and blessing to the kingdom. Sometimes, it seemed the people were showing so much adoration to prove a point-the point being they wished for Royal (even though he was only a toddler) to lead them someday. ]
[ It made Royal sad to see all of the pressure that was put on the older sister he loved so much. Since he came out of the womb, November had always been so loving towards him, taking care of him, playing with him, talking with and singing to him. She always shared her pretty toys and clothes with him, too. Soon, she became his favorite person in the world, he would prefer to be with her than his own parents. They were two peas in a pod, joined at the hip, inseparable. Well, not really inseparable, unfortunately. Both children were to undergo heavy tutoring, the core subjects, fine arts, sports, the works. And when November began her training, it became harder to spend time playing with her little brother. It was always obvious to Royal (and the kingdom, though they turned a blind eye) how much more pressure weighed on November’s shoulders. She was the heir, she had to be perfect. She was scrutinized for her mistakes, and had so much to learn and memorize. Her studies and classes were forced to become her hobbies and interests because they were the only things she had time and energy to do. He didn’t understand, as a child, why she’d rather study than play. But soon enough, Royal would share her mindset. ]
[ Just because he wasn’t first in line didn’t mean Royal was off the hook, or that he could slack off. Crispin and April still very much intended for Royal to be a king someday, hopefully in a nearby kingdom. Soon, his days were filled with study sessions in the library and tutors from all over the world. He was to learn how to manage a kingdom, ballroom dancing, fencing, horseback riding, and kingdom history as well. Him and November were not taught together, so the only times they saw each other were bits of weekends and evenings. It almost seemed as if everyone was purposefully trying to keep them apart from one another. But nothing was able to ruin their bond. They’d slip letters under each other’s doors, wink as they passed each other in the hallways, leave gifts on each other’s silken pillowcases. And, sometimes, if they could sneak into each other’s rooms without getting caught, they would talk quietly, watching the moon and reviewing their days, wishing things were just a bit different for each other and themselves. ]
[ Life went on this way for awhile, and Royal learned to be satisfied and find joy in everything-the business, the pressure, and the studies. He only grew more famous and beloved in the kingdom as he grew older, and made plenty of friends there as well. They shared a different bond than him and November, but he loved them dearly, and would’ve done anything for them. His best friend out of all of them, Jupiter, was a close second to November. But he didn’t tell him everything. Especially not that he had a crush on him. And that he was questioning his sexuality. His parents weren’t disproving of homosexuality, however, they were pretty set on both November and Royal finding a match that was the opposite gender of them, following tradition with a king and queen. It didn’t help that April and Crispin were practically shoving matches down his throat, setting him up on dates with girls from other kingdoms. And though he didn’t think he was gay, he felt attraction to girls, too, he didn’t feel a connection with a single one. He wanted something natural, something he had decided, he wanted something with his best friend. November was supportive, she was questioning as well. But both of them knew that it was never going to happen, even though they didn’t admit it. ]
[ Royal hated November’s betrothed from the start. As soon as he saw that rugged, smirking face, and his sister’s disappointed, uncomfortable one, he just wanted to break the guy’s jaw. Yeah, he tried, a bit, but the guy treated him like literal trash, like he was only a child, despite being around the same age. Like he deserved no respect just because he wasn’t first in line. This didn’t cause Royal to feel insecure about his status, just a deep resentment for the guy. And his opinion only worsened from there. Her betrothed, Bleu, did not only lack respect for Royal, he disrespected the king and queen behind their back, and disrespected his sister the most. He was a pig, and he didn’t even try to care about her or see her as a human being. Whenever Royal complained about him, though, he was told he was jealous because not only did his sister have a betrothed, she was also first in line, and he was second. But that wasn’t it at all, and him and November knew it. She had bad feelings about the whole thing, too. ]
[ One night, April, Crispin, Royal, and November were invited to have dinner with Bleu, at his kingdom. Royal didn’t want to go, but he didn’t have a choice. If he skipped an event, he would be found out and make headlines. Then, people would suspect unfriendliness between Bleu and November’s kingdom…it would just be a mess. The dinner was almost unbearable, he had to bite his tongue and grit his teeth not to make any remarks on how stupid this guy was. He could see right through his act-which wasn’t even well-put together. Bleu was uneducated, ill-mannered, and offensive. He didn’t understand how April and Crispin couldn’t see it. Or maybe they just really wanted this to work. He didn’t mean to snoop, really. What he did next came only out of worry for November, who was speaking on the balcony with her betrothed. He listened in on their conversation, which took a dark turn very quickly. He heard Bleu arguing with November, then yelling, then screaming at her, calling her names. And that was the last straw. He barged onto the balcony, and punched Bleu, first in the jaw, next in the nose. And once he started, he couldn’t stop. He could hear cracking and cursing as he pinned him to the ground, hitting him over and over again. The only thing he couldn’t hear was November begging him to stop. Bleu tried to get the upper-hand, and might’ve succeeded if Royal didn’t pull a dirty move. Was it really cheating if they hadn’t discussed the rules beforehand? The guards were coming. Of course they could hear the commotion, practically the whole castle could. Royal knew he had to stop, but it was like he was possessed. He couldn’t. November and Royal were found basically untouched, Bleu injured with a sapphire knife buried in his thigh. ]
[ Needless to say, no one was very happy about what had happened. The kingdom was disappointed in their beloved prince for assaulting who they saw as a perfectly fine individual. April and Crispin were stressed, scared to death as they desperately tried to patch things up with Bleu’s parents, scared the betrothal would fall through. November and him didn’t speak. But they relied on each other heavily during that time. It was something they were in together, another thing only they would understand. What hurt a lot was Jupiter’s disappointment. He and some other members of Royal’s inner circle expressed they no longer wanted anything to do with him. And there ended his first love. For a few days, everything felt blue, dark, and up in the air. Though, a week later, things started to shift back to normal. The betrothal was still intact, but Royal would not be invited to the wedding, nor the best man. He would never be able to interact with his brother-in-law, and he was definitely not forgiven (like he even apologized). Royal was not allowed to study abroad like he had wished to, but it wasn’t like he had his friends to go with anyways. The two began their studies once more, and even though things were supposed to be normal, they didn’t anymore. And after a month, something different happened. Two golden envelopes arrived in the mail, invitations to a real school. ]
[ It was so easy for November to persuade their parents to allow her to go. But it took a lot more for them to even consider letting their son go after what he pulled at that dinner. It felt like there was nothing left for him in the kingdom. He needed an escape, and he needed to get away. And he didn’t want to be separated from November and left alone with his parents who were definitely still p-ssed about the whole ordeal. But in the end, they relented. Maybe both of their children could become better, more prepared for life, from this. Maybe Royal would straighten out, maybe he’d meet a girl of status there, too. However, he was absolutely NOT allowed to attend the dances and events. He was there to better himself, not have fun. And, if he messed up again, he would be facing much more severe consequences. “It’s time to grow up, Roy.” Were his father’s last words to him. Royal left the kingdom with nothing (okay, maybe that was a lie, he packed, like, five suitcases). He had no friends, his reputation was ruined, and his relationship with his parents was… yeah. At least he had his sister, and they would be going together. He just hoped no one there would find out about his past. Stabbing someone is not really a good look. ]

…```. As her ‘real’ self Twāgast is an insecure girl who formally took her anger on her close relatives. She never believes in the ‘plain average’ side of her and doesn’t believe she could achieve anything in this form. Unlike her mother she wasn’t super smart and so her looks might not be overlooked. She’s known for being quiet and a girl who loves to draw , sing when she washes her hand (or alone) and to give names to her objects- making her peers think she’s even weirder and treat her even more like a freak show. Twāgast developed a distrust of hot guys and girls who showed interest in her due to what happened to her. It also made her judge them a lot. Though as Dýo she is confident, sarcastic, bold, more athletic than her original body and feels like she could do anything. She gets a lot of attention and love from people who treats her original body like a freak show (though she treats them harshly and coldly for that in this form.)
…```Twāgast is really protective of her secret and won’t dare tell anyone, not even her closest friends know about her two bodies. The only people who know are her family members- though her cousin makes fun of her for it. Twāgast threatens her cousins with a secret she knows about them in order for them to be quiet.
~𝓫𝓲𝓸𝓰𝓻𝓪𝓹𝓱𝔂:
Born the daughter of the ugly sister in Ricky and Tuff, Twāgast can’t really say life has been fair to her. Her father was a handsome man who fell in love with her mom’s intelligence. Her other siblings inherited their father’s handsome appearance, while Twāgast she well… Inherited her mom’s appearance. Now Twāgast wasn’t as ugly as her mom, she was plain and below average but not really ‘ugly’. Anyways ever since she was young, she had been ridiculed for her looks. Being called all sorts of names like, “pig” “troll” “ugly b*tch” every time she walked the halls in school and her siblings and cousins teasing/insulting her in the same way didn’t help Twāgast insecurities. The only people she truly had where her parents. Twāgast really wished that she was as smart as her mother so her looks will be overlooked just like her mom.
At age 14, Twāgast had a crush on a girl named Lorelai. She was beautiful with tan skin, full lips and gorgeous eyes you could get lost in like a Labyrinth. Lorelai was nice and friendly to her, at first Twāgast was suspicious on why a girl like Lorelai would hang out with someone like her- her cousin and siblings thought it was weird too, ‘why would a beautiful girl like her hang out with someone like you?’ they sneered.
After some time Twāgast asked Lorelai why she kept spending time with her and Lorelai said something that made Twāgast as red as a tomato, “Because you’re cute” No one but her parents have told her that, those words were song to her ears coming for Lorelai. Lorelai and her began to date surprising everyone but Twāgast didn’t care, she had Lorelai by her side and they both felt the same way for each other- or so she thought. One day Lorelai accidentally left her book on her house when they were studying together and Twāgast went to her house to return it back. Lorelai’s mom let her in, telling her Lorelai was at the garden and giving her cookies Twāgast’s eyes lit up with happiness, Lorelai’s mom was an angel just like Lorelai. Twāgast giggled and went to the garden to personally give Lorelai her book.
Entering inside the garden, Twāgast saw three of Lorelai’s best friend: Erick, Vanessa and Grey. Surprisingly the three were never against their relationship and instead cheered them on. Twāgast smiled she was about to walk up to them when she heard Erick began to talk “Ugh, still can’t believe you won.” Lorelai smirked, “Told ya I could do it.” Vanessa giggled, “Anyways so when are you breaking up with the pig? The dare is over isn’t it?” Lorelai smiled, “In the next 5 days, I want to continue playing with her a little.” The 4 of them began to laugh, unaware of the presence of Twāgast. “It’s shocking how piggy thinks a girl like her could be love by me. Which person in their right minds would date her.” The book Twāgast was holding dropped to the ground and the 4 friends turned to see Twāgast, their eyes widened. Twāgast couldn’t stop the tears in her eyes as she ran away from the spot, she could hear someone calling out for her but she didn’t care.
Twāgast reached her home in tears, she wanted to tell her mom or dad what had happened but unfortunately they travelled out somewhere and instead of them her cousin who had come to visit and her siblings were in the sitting room. Twāgast wanting to tell someone cried in front of them and told them about what had happen. They just blinked and shrugged, “You should have expected Lorelai was playing with your feelings, after all what other reason would she have to date someone like you?” And that’s when Twāgast cracked. She ran up to her room, locked the door and cried her pain away. She hated her siblings and her cousin, she hated- no hate was a small word for how she felt about them she loathed them with burning passion. She hated her siblings, her cousins, Lorelai and her friends with a burning passion. She wished her parents were here, the only two people who truly cared about her.
After few mintues of crying, Twāgast was visited by a fairy. The fairy promised her to give her beauty if she gave her the ring she was wearing. Twāgast at first was skeptical but decided she had nothing to lose and agreed to give the fairy her ring. The fairy looked at the ring and smiled, she tapped the ring and gave it back to Twāgast. “When you tapped the blue circle on the ring you will become beautiful.” The fairy disappeared. Twāgast looked at the formerly plain ring she wore, which was now a beautiful ring. Twagast tapped the blue gem on the ring to see if it truly worked. Sigh, nothing felt different but she had to be sure… she checked the mirror and gasped at her reflection. She looked like she could be a model with sparkly grey eyes, a spilt of blue and pink hair, porcelain skin and long hair.
After some years Twāgast grew comfortable with Dyo, the name of her other self. She felt more comfortable in Dyo’s body than her original one, she sassed her siblings and cousins any chance she got and she took revenge on lorelai and her friends. If there was something Twāgast despised more than her siblings + cousin and Lorelai and her friends were fake people, and she found a lot of fake people coming into the school as both Dyo and Twāgast.
Anyways Twāgast received a letter to enter a school called Once Upon a time and she agreed to go as her parents thought this was a perfect chance for her to make more friends- Twāgast didn’t need more friends, the only friends she needed were Ty-ty and Lila her two best friends who loved her greatly and this time their platonic love for her was real and Twāgast could tell. Other people were a little fake and Twāgast didn’t trust them but she agreed to come nonetheless.

Madalena
Character name: Madalena
Child of: The Maiden with the Rose on her Forehead
Gender: Female
Pronouns: She/Her
Age: 16
Sexual orientation: Asexual
Romantic orientation: Omniromantic
Best subject: Fashion Design & Cosmetology
Personality: Madalena never liked being the center of attention. If the topic is about her, she’ll quickly move it away to something else. She hates being in a cramped space and loves to stretch her legs. Madalena likes to observe and watch people too, which sometimes leads to staring. She also has a particular dislike for intoxicating smells. Madalena is deathly afraid of burning herself again and will avoid anything that could burn her at all costs. Madalena quite often ruins her mood on accident by thinking about the past or a nightmare she had. Sometimes she can be brought back to a bright smile, yet other times the conversation wilts entirely. She also falls into pessimistic tendencies if she’s not doing something entertaining. Madalena uses cynicism to put up walls to protect her withering heart. It’s become a habit for Madalena to worry, even about trivial matters. She barely even knows what it’s like to not worry about something. On a brighter note, if Madalena is comfortable around someone, that’s when Madalena truly blooms. Madalena has the potential to be sarcastic and laugh a lot when she feels safe. People must simply be careful, lest the thorns of cynicism prick them.
Biography: Madalena was pampered and given whatever she needed in her early life. She was tended to as thoroughly as the rose garden was. However, this did overwhelm her, like an overpowering smell. So, she often ran to random parts of the palace to escape the constant attention. One day while she was doing this, she discovered something that made her sick to her stomach. When she asked her mother about what she found, her mother recounted her life story. After that day, everything that was beautiful now stung, the sweet food was bitter, all the rosed pricked her, and the peaceful dreams changed to reoccurring nightmares. Madalena felt sick when she was in the palace, which led her to wander further away from it. The outside world provided a breath of fresh air. Madalena enjoyed traversing the open streets, seeing all the different kinds of people and things. The most dreaded thing of her day was going back home to sleep. When she did, she always received a sickeningly sweet amount of care.
Yet, luck did not shine on Madalena. She decided to help make food for a large party some people in the town were having. Madalena loved working hard with them since it gave her a sense of immense accomplishment and happiness. Perhaps she was too joyful, and that’s what made her careless. While handling a boiling hot pot of water, some kids playing tag accidentally knocked her over. When she fell, the boiling water spilled onto her right shoulder, burning her. Everyone turned their attention to her to help and get her some medical attention. They urged her to go home to get treated, but Madalene was reluctant. She was afraid of what her family would think. She couldn’t handle it. Her brain was worrying about the townsfolk, she was experiencing the worst pain she had ever felt, and she couldn’t contain her tears any longer. Madalene’s tears tore out of her eyes like a volcano erupting. She couldn’t form coherent sentences, only tear-filled words tangled together. Madalena pleaded with the townsfolk not to tell her family what happened. She was worried about what would happen to them if her family found out. Despite her pleas, some adults started heading to the palace. So, Madalena clenched her teeth and stood to her feet. Keeping her arm as still as possible to minimize her pain, she went to the palace as fast as she could. On the way, Madalena convinced the adults that were going there to go along with her story. As soon as Madalena got there, she lied about how she retained the burn so that the townsfolk wouldn’t get in trouble then passed out from the pain. The medical staff treated her burns with utmost care and made sure she took all the medicine for recovery. It was torture for Madalena, the exact opposite of what made her happy. She was being taken care of all day and night, and she had to stay in the palace. After what felt like an eternity, Madalena had fully healed. She was so excited to get back out on the streets.
Once again, Madalena didn’t get lucky. Because of her story, her family decided it was too dangerous for her to leave the palace alone. When Madalena heard of this new rule, her heart felt like it wilted into ash. The rose on her head blackened as she stormed to her room. Madalena locked herself up in her room and just focused on sewing, a hobby they did while recovering too. Sewing helped her ignore everything she hated about her situation, a helpful distraction. Even so, it was almost unbearable, the feeling of being rooted, stuck in the palace of her nightmares. Suddenly, lady luck decided to shine on Madalena. This luck came in the form of a letter, an escape, an offer to go to OUAH. She knew nothing of the school, yet she thought there’s a low chance of it being worse than the palace. Madalena reluctantly told her family of her decision, then swiftly departed to Once Upon a High.

[ Horatio is a definite pessimist, though they call themselves realistic. They never see the good in anything or any situation, a paranoid overthinker who always sees the worst thing that could happen. Life’s handed them a bad deal, and they wouldn’t consider their years so far ‘good’ by any means, and they expect things to stay that way. Even when something good is happening to them, Horatio doesn’t crack a smile, wondering when things will get bad again, or they become suspicious of why things are turning up. Every time someone suggests something exciting, they ruin it with a way the event could turn sour. They’re gloomy to be around, and sort of a mood-killer. Being happy around Horatio would feel awkward, and they seem to be out to crush everyone with a smile, even though that’s not exactly true. Horatio is morally grey, they do things for themself and Leonor, regardless if it’s “good” or “bad”. They don’t see themselves as a good or bad person, though they occasionally justify their actions. They don’t really care about being seen as a good person or a hero. ]
[ Horatio doesn’t usually crack smiles or jokes, but like almost everyone, they do have a sense of humor, preferring dark humor. They don’t usually laugh at jokes, even ones they find amusing, and they don’t like the way their laugh sounds anyways. Horatio is a bit morbid with the way they speak and the things they say, and always has seemed like a creepy person. They like horror, gore, and the feeling of being terrified, and they also like scaring others. Their eyes always look kinda dead and zoned-out, and they never really look people in the eyes unless they’re angry. Horatio is often feeling deflated, and doesn’t usually take good care of themselves and their mental health. They always look unkempt, with three days’ ago black eyeshadow leftover and below their eyes. They usually have to be reminded by Leonor, and it takes a lot of persuading and complaining. They are very fond of their hair, they’ve been growing it out for a long time, but it’s still often a matted mess. Horatio is quiet, not one to approach someone or talk much. They are closed off, and never tell anyone their thoughts and secrets, they put their emotions into songwriting and nothing else. They act emotionless, and they somewhat are, very passive about events and things that happen to them. ]
[ Despite the shaggy and grimy appearance, Horatio is responsible, which came partly naturally and partly from having to take care of Leonor for so long. They can take care of their basic needs, as well as those of others. They are excellent with deadlines, and have good problem-solving skills. Though, sometimes, the solution is just stealing. They kinda have sticky fingers. Horatio is lethargic, and unmoving, like a rock. Despite always completing tasks, they do little else, never going out with friends, or visiting interesting places. However, they are very fond of music, and a good song is one of the things that can make them smile. They are almost always listening to music, and it can even be a coping mechanism for them. They also learnt to play a guitar as a way to earn some pocket change, and discovered it is something they genuinely enjoy. They only play for Leonor, but they Horatio has never had a crush on anyone before, not experiencing any sexual attraction, and little romantic attraction. However, there is a small part of them that is slightly interested in the idea. Perhaps it would spark some song ideas. ]

[ Horatio does not remember most of their childhood. It all seems to be a blur, a somewhat happy blur, but with a melancholy, black ending. That’s the most they can remember, and they don’t wish to try to find any more. Horatio’s mother, Maria, was known as the most beautiful woman in her village. With her long, wavy, black hair, thick eyelashes, and stunning brown eyes, almost every man in the village wanted her. However, she was picky, and rejected them all, even for the smallest things, slightly large nostrils, or a jagged part in their hair. Maria was infamous for being beautiful, but cruel in that way, rejecting men bluntly and unreasonably. The man she eventually wed was a foreigner who was just as beautiful as her. Soon, they had beautiful twins together-Leonor and Horatio. And their life was happy. Average, really, they were neither rich nor poor, and their fame did not extend beyond the edges of the village yet, but Maria was content anyways. Horatio and Leonor were just like the other children, they would play, go to school, and eat meals together. They had plenty of friends in the village, and would frequently run with them, or play games and sports. Maria’s reputation improved, and the twin’s parents found themselves making more friends, too. However, their father was not content with everything, which was made apparent when he cheated on Maria with a woman much younger than her. ]

[ Maria found the two in her bed. She felt betrayed, screaming and cursing at the two, smashing vases, leaving sharp shards of porcelain all over the floor of her home. She told her traitorous husband he would be sorry. Her rage blinded her. All she could think about in the moment was how she could get back at the man who had broken her heart. She wanted to take away something from him as precious as her heart. Their children, the twins. Maria found the children laughing and playing in the marketplace, eating fruits together, juice dribbling down their chins as they spoke of the toys the wanted and what they’d learned in school that day. Maria took each child by their wrist, nails pinching their flesh as she dragged them away. She headed towards a river, saying no words, despite her children’s terrified protests and questions. There, she chopped them into pieces and threw them into the murky waters. When Maria faded out of her rage and realized what she had done, she was filled with regret. Consumed by her guilt, she let out a shrill scream and drowned herself in the same river. A few days later, the remains of the family were discovered, and all three were, obviously, pronounced dead. ]
[ Hundreds of years later, the two woke up on the river’s edge, dark water lapping over their bodies. They had no memories of what had happened to them, they had no memories of their past at all. All they had were their names, and the knowledge that they were twin siblings. They had scars all over their bodies. And when the two exhausted children came across a nearby village (the one they used to reside in), the villagers were disgusted at the sight of them. Their scars made them hideous in those people’s eyes. No one wanted to take in these strange children that said they woke up by the lake. They were allowed to live in a shack, and offered small scraps of food out of pity- a small sacrifice in hopes the maimed children would leave them alone. Introverted Horatio seemed to accept and adapt to this fate sooner than their sister, Leonor, who seemed devastated that the other children shunned them, and they were confined to a hut with walls thinner than cardboard. Horatio was introverted, and different from how they were in the past. They didn’t want to be liked, they just wanted to be alone. Besides, they could see how hideous they were. Who would want to be friends with children as disgusting as them? They explained this to Leonor, but she didn’t understand. She didn’t see the world the way they did. ]
[ They were a realist, but they loved Leonor. Yes, they were critical of her, but no matter who she was or how she acted, they never shunned her like the others, and they never yelled at her and disciplined her. Even though they were the same age, Horatio took responsibility over themself and Leonor. They found as many jobs as they could-jobs where they would never be seen. However, this wasn’t enough, just like the scraps the villagers fed them as children weren’t enough. They needed more money if they wanted to live. So Horatio became a thief as well. They only stole what was needed, but they stole nonetheless. Stealing clothing, food, and blankets for Leonor and themself. They weren’t evil, but stealing didn’t make them feel like a bad person. They didn’t see it as doing something wrong, these people deserved it for shunning them, ignoring them, letting them suffer because of something they couldn’t control. Plus, they had plenty to spare. Eventually, Leonor found a job as a seamstress. Horatio was open about their stealing, which she didn’t approve of, but they didn’t care for her opinion on it, especially since stealing seemed to be keeping them alive. When they were eighteen, they got invited to a school that sounded much too fancy to care about two people like them. They didn’t care about the twins, they were more interested in parents the twins knew nothing about. Horatio agreed to go with Leonor, it seemed better than living impoverished in a village that hoped they would leave. They didn’t even say goodbye as they packed what the had and left for the school with Leonor. ]
