Film: The Virgin Suicides

Who has heard of this film called The Virgin Suicides? For those who don’t know the film, it’s about 5 sisters who were born & brought up in a very religious family. The first sister who was the youngest committed suicide (she was 13 years old) and one of the sisters has Borderline Personality Disorder which leaves her no choice but to do destructive things which I won’t give out any information if you haven’t watched the film. The film was set in the 70s and was directed by Sofia Coppola, it is also based on a book.

If you have watched the film, what are your thoughts? I personally thought it was a good film because it does show what super religious parents are like.

Btw, you might have to watch this film online because it will be difficult for you to find it on Netflix.

Ahhhh one of my favorite movies ever!!!

It was really faithful to the book as well, so I recommend that, too. One of the only book/movie combo where they are both equally good.

That scene is so relatable! A lot of adults are ignorant on what goes through a teenager’s mind. I thought the doctor was very incompetent to say that.

But oh man, the ending was so disturbing!

Yes, exactly. Some adults seem to forget how hard it is to be a teen. But I do kind of get it sometimes because I feel like now I’d be so good at being young since I’m much more confident and I loved not having to make my own money haha.

But yes, the ending was rough. Not a movie for everyone for sure. I loved it and didn’t think it glorified suicide (like other things have), but still not suitable for everyone.

It didn’t glorify suicide at all. The story was portrayed very well and it’s more like a cautionary tale for parents that shelter their children. In all honesty, I think the mother is to blame because she didn’t really care about her daughters that she imprisoned them, this is not healthy at all.

I haven’t seen this movie or read the books at all. Is it bad like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Swedish version) or more tamed than that movie?

It’s pretty tamed. I only have seen the film of The Virgin Suicides, it’s a really good film which portrays mental health.
