I think it depends. I mean, if a kid grew up with it without being taught first the way to communicate verbally in front, you could say it hasn’t, but if you look at someone who grew up always talking verbally and needed a way to contact someone far away, you would say it helps them out.

I think it has. Many people just can’t communicate verbally (for different reasons) and being able to talk to someone who’s far away can have some advantages.
And communication itself just got more variety, more ways to communicate, share information and reach more people!
