If all these things were originally for men… then there’s no such thing as clothes for men/women? Clothes are just… clothes? That’s it?
Yup
Clothes are just clothes
Make up is just make up
It’s for everyone.
marketing however and business will try and make it appeal to certain genders which then has those items categorized as being “guy things” and “girl things”
Rigid gender roles make capitalist society more efficient. By setting people into boxes they work more quickly and efficiently. Really that simple, honestly. Being a caregiver and childrearer is seen as a woman’s job, so they aren’t allowed to work or do manual labour, or fight or anything like that. They need to do domestic things which comes with the image of softer, more calm ideas. Men need to be violent and closed off to be better soldiers, so they can’t have good relationships with their children. They need to be kept at work all day if they aren’t fighting. Stuff like this is what ingraines gender roles. Society. Men are just as capable of being caretakers and childrearers and women are just as capable of being murderous sociopaths.
Btw I write this while sat in “guys clothes”
And and, rigid gender roles? Very large part of fascism too. Women should be ‘barefoot and pregnant’ and men should be dogmatically patriotic soldiers ready to die the hero they were born to be in defense of their proud nation.
Gender roles are integral to this
The real question is what started this ‘men are meant for war, and fighting,’ and ‘woman take care of kids and housework.’ Woman count on there husbands to bring money and food to there homes. This has been going on for centuries and I could never understand why…
I have a hoodie or two of Deluge’s. I wonder if I become a man when I wear them… ![]()
So things like dolls, hair accessories, perfume/cologne… anyone can use it? I mean, especially perfume…
To expand on this, the way clothing is fitted will be to suit the male/female body. So the clothing may be labled as this so that you know how it fits.
That doesn’t mean you are labled the same way as the clothing is.
Is capitalist society at fault for these gender roles though?
Yup! One of my favourite YouTubers is a trans man who made a whole range of clothes that look “masculine” and are cut to hide chests etc
Men wear perfume!
Try and keep my Dad away from free samples in my Mum’s magazines.
My male cousin used to play with my baby dolls when he came over to my house something my uncle didn’t approve of
As for hair accessories, I have some adorable pictures of my brother in a tiara
What is cologne if not perfume for men?
It’s just that people use different words because they want to feel separate. And then they can make the women’s one pink and charge more money for it ![]()
Lynx made a whole women’s range after they realised girls liked to steal Lynx from their friends and boyfriends
It hasn’t been going on for centuries. In fact, it’s fairly recent post-enlightenment stuff. If you were a noble, man or woman you probably didn’t work at all, you had servants. If you were a peasant? Man or woman, you tended the farm or the animals. You had equal part in your child’s life because they helped you work. You also had a very close family-like relationship to the people of your town./village and helped raise each other’s children communally.
The atomisation of society into these rigid roles for genders and ages is actually quite recent. Even if you go back far enough to pre-civilisation, it was practical matters that made men hunt more. Physical males tend to have more bone density and broader shoulders, making it easier for them to wield a spear, and physical females would be pregnant a lot of the time. Doesn’t mean they didn’t hunt. Evidence points to everyone hunting, gathering and scavenging regardless of sex
Think of “coke zero” and “diet coke”
They are effectively the same thing. But one is aimed at males, the other is aimed at females.
Market research indicated that males don’t like the term “diet”
So “girly things” like barrettes, bows and bonnets (the silk ones)… it’s ok for anyone to wear? They don’t need to be fixed to a gender?
There are some weapons that women are typically better at using ![]()
Anybody who wants to wear one, yes
Not quite. The enlightenment is. Pre-capitalist society that led to the establishment of capitalism and cemented everything as it was, including problematic gender roles and ingrained systemic racism and sexism
Huh, so business also plays a role. Right?
