I thought any injuries you get as an animal would heal as you morph, not the other way around

Essentially if you morphed into say a dog and got your leg chopped off, the second you morphed back into human your leg would be fine.
Ideally if you got injured while as a human and morphed into something to reset the injury it should work as well?
Not to get into spoilers but this plays a pretty major plot point in the late game of the series
