Is there really a point in a character with nothing to live for

The question itself is pretty straightforward, so let’s add some extra things:
Have you ever had a character who, at some point, had nothing to live for?
Would you be able to play one of those characters without a meaning?
What would be challanging?

I’m not really sure, 'cause that’s almost saying that they have no short or long-term goals. And if that’s the case then, no, not really.
