Chapter 1
The rain was pouring down on the small town as the mystery girl went running through the woods. So much had to change before she could catch her breath. She jumped a little as the thunder rolled in, and the baby in her hands began to cry. She looked down at the baby’s wet face. Trying her best to shield the baby from the cold, wind, and rain.
As she continued to run through the woods she looked over her shoulder. A sliver of sadness, and doubt crossed her mind as she left the cabin behind. The baby made a small whimpering sound as she held her tighter. As if being able to keep the wind, and rain away from her child. She continued to run again as she tried to look ahead through the woods. Not only was it raining, but it was hard to see the woods in the dead of night.
With no light even from the moon the girl continued to run through the woods. Her coat slung over her shoulder in a massive hurry she tried her best to try and see the end of the woods from where she was standing.
As she stood under a tree, trying to calm her child she heard a branch break behind her. Her heart jumped in horror as she looked back behind her. Only hoping that the sound was from an animal, or just the wind playing games. But deep down she knew that it wasn’t just a small animal or the wind, but the guy she was trying to get away from. Her child squirmed a little more. Not enjoying the rain or wind on her soft face.
The girl held her child and tried to shush her a little more. She had to hurry if she wanted them both to make it out alive, especially her child. There was another stick that broke in the distance, and the sound of a lot of movement. It was too soon for them to be caught. She didn’t want to be dragged back to that cabin of horrors. She shivered against her thoughts. Not even the wind, and rain could send a sliver of coldness down her back. Only the very thought of having to raise her child in that cabin, with that man. He’ll get what he deserved.
She snapped out of her thoughts as she heard footsteps getting closer. Holding her child closer she quietly moved along to the end of the woods. Following the trail from her walks she use to take she made sure to get her baby out. A few miles away, she tried to stay blended into the woods. Actually thankful for the rain and the no moon. She looked up and actually saw a small sliver of the moon trying to break from the heavy rain clouds.
Fear engulfed her as she looked back towards the path she came. Actually being able to see her footprints on the dirt ground. This wasn’t good at all, she just knew they wouldn’t be able to make it out like this. She would have to start running again. Before she could even take one step forward she heard a dark laughter that she knew all too well. Pretending like she didn’t hear anything off she continued to walk on. Holding her baby tightly as if a shield for her freedom.
“You honestly thought running away was the best option?” She picked up her steps to a small jog. She refused to have her baby go back in that cabin. The Cabin, the place where her whole life ended in one fail swoop.”You mine as well stop running. If you come back now things would be easier.” She could hear the smirk in his voice, but kept jogging.
If it wasn’t for her baby she wouldn’t have hope at all. Hope was a tool that he played with, and that she later on lost after months of having it torn down. But she did have hope in making it out. She knew that if he could really see her, he would’ve had her shot by now. As she kept jogging her baby started to have a small whimper. That slowly turned into a steady cry. If she was weak enough she would’ve started to cry as well, but now wasn’t the time for crying, not yet anyways.
She tried to shush her some more before The Man could hear the cries. But with the howling wind, and the temperature dropping. Her baby wasn’t up to the whole ordeal. She couldn’t help it anymore. She broke out into a sprint towards the light that lead out of the woods. Before she could reach for the clearing she heard a gunshot behind her. Not only did her baby burst into an even more fitful rage, but the birds as well went up squawking in the air. She knew that he finally had eyes on her, and it brought her back to their time in the woods when he’d shoot off the gun trying to scare her.
But this time it wasn’t her life she was caring for. It was the life of her small, innocent child in her arms, and she was gonna get her to freedom. As she ran to the edge of the woods she saw a gas station in the distance. Before she could even step into the open area she felt a bullet entered her left arm. Thankfully it missed her baby, but she let out a small yelp of pain as she quickly ran, breaking from the protection of the tall trees she ran straight into the gas station. While in there the clerk looked at her up and down.”You good miss?”
By then her baby was screaming and not enjoying anything. She could fully see that her arm was bleeding profusely. She placed her baby in a box on the side of the counter and looked at the clerk.”Please call 911, and don’t let her out of your sight till they get here.”
The man was beyond confused. It showed all over his face that he didn’t even know what to say, but nodded slowly and going over to the phone and calling the police. Once he came back up front to the store he saw the strange, bleeding lady talking to her baby in hushed tones. With all the adrenaline pumping she didn’t even realise she was making a pool of blood on his floor. He bent down next to her and tried to look at it closely.”Would you like me to check that out?” She held her arm quickly. She was only concerned about getting her baby to safety, not her.
She could hear a few more gunshots closer.”When are the police coming?!” The man looked around as if the shots came from inside the store.”I-I don’t know-they just said…to stay indoors.” A few more went off outside, and in the distance she could see him. Standing there, locking his deep black eyes on her light chocolatey ones. She shivered in so much fear. She had to protect her baby at all cost.”I’m going out there.” The cashier stood up and shook his head.”Are you crazy?! He’s gonna kill you!” The mystery girl stood up as she looked back at her baby. Now sleeping quietly all snuggled up with her jacket.”I have to…for her.” She stood up slowly and walked out into the rain. The cashier couldn’t hear what was being said, but all he saw was the man raising his gun and shooting the girl. He jumped back as he saw her fall on the floor. Her curly black hair hitting the ground in a scary, yet graceful way. He couldn’t believe his eyes, and the sound of the gunshot sent the baby in a fitful cry again. The Man outside looked toward the store and walked toward it. The cashier looked at the baby as he scooped her in his arms and quickly placed her in the back. Once he came back out the office he came face to face with a gun.
Then darkness.
The sirens sounded as The Man got ready to pick up the baby. She was crying and her fist swung as if in protest for not having her mother there. Then he heard the sirens getting closer. He knew he wouldn’t be able to make it out in time with a baby in his arms. He quickly left the gas station leaving before anyone could see him, but he could see them as he waited in the woods.
Detective Jess walked out her car and towards the gas station.”What do we have here?” An IT worker walked up with a report in his hand.”Seems like these two were shot, but we didn’t find no gun, or sign of a struggle, but we’re gonna check the cameras later on.”
Jess walked into the place and looked around.”I wonder who would do something like this.” Before she could say more she saw the baby in the corner having a crying fit. Jess picked her up and cradled her.”This poor baby. She must’ve been left here during all of this.” Her heart ached for this poor baby. Especially being abandoned herself she knew how hard it was, and to see this little girl pulled her heart strings. One of the officers laughed to the side, but close enough for her to hear.”Guess she really does have a heart.” They all burst out laughing as she walked past and grabbed his hat off his head.”And it looks like I also have you off my case. Get outta my crime scene.” The other officers stopped laughing as she walked past with the baby in her arms and her phone in hand.
She stepped outside to speak with a social worker. While in the distance from the top of a nearby tree The Man watched detective Jess as she talked to another lady. He felt a small smile spread over his mouth as he watched carefully. That’s when he realised what he had to do, and the mistake he made with the last girl.Waiting, that was what he had to do. Wait and watch for the right time to get his new wife. Since his last one decided to go rogue. But no worries. He had a plan, and it all starts with Jess and that baby.
