I look up to Molly Burke, who is blind. What about you guys? What celebrities with a disability do you look up to?
AHHH STAN MOLLY
Yes! We stan!
for sure ^-^
@Discussions do you know of any?
She isn’t famous, but I met this older woman who was mentally disabled, she was somewhere in her 70’s and was born with her disability. She talked about how when she was little, people shut her out, turned her away and basically created the disability for her.
She said that she didn’t care about her own struggles because she lived her life the only she knew how to, but society created the obstacles and made her life hard.
She said she decided to stop caring when she turned 40, she started proving people wrong and showed that she needed help, she just needed to be accepted like a human being.
That was really inspiring to me and I use her as a role model as how to treat people in my field.
Rosie Jones, the hilarious British comedian with Cerebral Palsy.
Uh…Satoshi Tajiri. Sorta??
Big Ocean definitely needs to be here
They’re the first hard-of-hearing k-pop group!
The members (from left to right in the above photo) are Park Hyunjin (aka PJ), Kim Jiseok, and Lee Chanyeon
I think it’s really cool how they incorporate sign language into their choreography and how they’re open about the ways they need to modify their rehearsal and recording processes to accommodate their disabilities
I also love this moment from their newest mv where Jiseok took out his hearing aid and sang with his natural voice (it’s the first time fans have heard any of their voices without corrective software)
@Discussions what disabled role models do you know?
Oh yeah٫ I remember you talk about them.
Stephen Hawkings! He’s so smart!
Oh my god٫ I forgot about him!
I know of many hard-of-hearing people who are also mute. Can they still sing? Or is it just sign? (Sorry if this sounds rude)
We love Stephen! ![]()
They sing!
At the moment, they don’t perform with live vocals but all of the members of this group can speak and sing
How did they learn to speak or sing? (Just curious, no intent to offend)
Were they born deaf?
One of the members (Jiseok) was born hard-of-hearing but the other two (PJ and Chanyeon) lost their hearing when they were kids
Can they hear anything without aid?
One of the members said in an interview that if he takes off his cochlear receivers, he hears ringing in his ears but the others said they hear nothing without their aids
