She took a seat next to him as he looked at the photo, turning her head in slight confusion as he told her that he didnāt know who that is.

Jezebel needed some form of affection, she needed to know people liked her. She had to be the nice, smart, interesting, popular girl. She needed everyone to know her, to like her. Whatever it took, she needed the attention, because that was as close as she could get to the feeling of being cared about, the feeling that she craved.
She neeeded Dan in her lifeā¦
Even if it wasnāt real, Jezebel could feel wanted. She had the looks, the people, and even the titles. The title of homecoming queen in her junior year, and of course prom queen as a senior. She had everything a high school girl could want, but it still wasnāt enough to earn her motherās approval.
When she graduated, for once Jezebel made a decision knowing it wouldnāt meet the approval of her family. She didnāt want to go to medical school and become a surgeon like her grandparents. She wanted something different, settling on graphic design, with some marketing as well.
She needed to take a risk for herself for once
Though, even she probably ended up telling herself that it was a mistake and she shouldāve done what her family wantedā¦
Her mother would say cruel things and wouldnāt always be there for her, but it was fine. Her mother loved her, right? Her past boyfriends, even toxic, said they loved her, so it was fine, right?
Even the toxic boyfriends at least said the words her mother wouldnāt
He said a lot of the same things to her that her mother didā¦
Then, when the fight was over, when he calmed down, he would go back to Jezebel and say every apology he could
He at least apologized to Jezā¦ her mom never did thatā¦
She always did something wrong, and she had the bruises to prove it. It started off as he would sometimes grab her arm too tight, but then came the first time he hit her, and that first time was far from the last. When he was upset, she became something for him to take it out on. If she had so much as a hair out of place compared to what Ryan wanted on anything, the physical pain was as harsh as the emotional pain.
She got so used to making those excusesā¦ she started to believe them herselfā¦

Leoās just learned how to interact with him, even if he didnāt like him. But Gregory was one of his fatherās friendsā¦

If there was one thing that was clear, it was that things would have to change. Kai would have to learn how to be the way his father wanted him to be. If he didnāt, who would? The more Kai played by his fatherās rules, the easier life would be for Raph, Akielah, and then his baby sister. When his father wasnāt happy, only Kai would have to take the heat. Kai just had to adapt, put on a facade, and be who he had to be.
