Its why she was so focused on Laurel, before and after she was born. Even the idea of there being a chance of losing her or anything happening to her was breaking her. Even when Laurel was a few years old, Jez was still living in a constant fear of not being enough to protect her, and feeling like she didn’t deserve what she did have. It was probably when she helped Jess that she finally started to process everything and feel better about it. Then talking to Jordan about it was probably what finally helped her be actually alright.
