Going to any family member, he would’ve been found and dragged back to Listaria immediately.
Scarlet would’ve been taken from him and he’d never get to see her again, and there’s no telling what kind of situation she’d be placed in (cause I can’t imagine the princess would make sure Kai’s daughter would be placed somewhere with a kind loving family. And she especially wouldn’t let her go to any of his family either)

In one scenario, he’d get to see her one last time.
In another scenario, he gets to at least try and make things right, so he can tell his daughter honestly, that when he’s messed up he’s always tried to make things right.
