She didn’t hesitate. She slid closer to him, wrapping her arms around his hunched frame, holding him tightly as if she could physically keep him from shattering.

For a long moment, she didn’t let go. She just held him, her cheek resting against his shoulder, trying to anchor them both in the moment. She felt him tremble slightly beneath her touch, and her own chest ached with an emotion she couldn’t quite name. Grief? Guilt? A mix of it all.

“No mother should have the chance to meet their child taken away…” Her hand drifted instinctively to her stomach, fingers brushing against the fabric of her shirt as a ghost of a memory surfaced—her own loss, the child she never got to meet.

She watched him as his arms adjusted automatically to hold Scarlet securely. There was something different in his expression—fragile, but a flicker of something beyond the grief. Maybe hope? She hoped it was… Either way, whatever it was, it made her chest ache in a way she couldn’t explain.

Aria Pierce was four years old, and tonight was the most important night of her entire life. Why? Because it was the Daddy-Daughter Dance at her school, duh!

Her dad turned around, dressed in a suit that made him look just like a prince from her storybooks. And for a moment, Aria couldn’t say anything because, wow, her daddy looked so cool.

And his lil girl is the only princess he could want to dance with

He wasn’t as good as her (obviously), but he was still the best dancer in the world because he was her daddy.

Part of his job is to make sure Aria looks good. He’s not the star of the show here. Princess Aria is the one in the spotlight

but he kept spinning her anyway because her giggles were the best sound in the world.

And even though she fell asleep in his arms halfway through the next song, Aria knew she’d remember this night forever. Because every princess deserved a dance with her daddy, and hers was the best daddy in the whole wide world.
