Well they were engaged in the original timeline when she left him so… 
He already wants to be engaged to her. Things just were a messy start to make him hesitate a little…
Its such a shock for her to want to be up early
It’s very suspicious, but he doesn’t have much other choice but to see what she’s planning
She was clearly up to something
It definitely caught him off guard…
How’s he supposed to know its only because she can’t imagine a life without him
And it meant a lack of control too…
He has in his mind how it’s supposed to be, and her proposing like that isn’t it.
She might always be thinking, but she’s thinking differently than usual…
He wants to marry her, desperately. Even though he said no
All he knows is that there’s someone in her past that she hurt, but that’s all she’s let him know…
Its not often that he lets even Addie see those insecurities… 
Part of him is terrified… he can read Addie well enough, and he’s put together enough of the pieces to know that the “other guy” from her past is someone she loved so deeply…
Its the only assumption he could make at that point
Its the only way she could ever lose him
He’s gotta make sure its a surprise for when it does happen
He made sure Addie got the best present possible
He knew what she wanted, and he made sure she got it exactly
He’s always going to look for ways to do even more for her

He probably thought she just had a really strong idea of what she wanted, and he just by some miracle happened to find one that was perfect
