He could lie and say he couldn’t sleep, or was bored, looking for a distraction, but as he walked through the long dark halls adorned with haunting portraits, each face twisted in pain or longing, their eyes following his every step, he knew he was just being stupid. He shuddered involuntarily, feeling the weight of their gaze bearing down on him. It was as if the very building itself was alive, watching and waiting for his next move.
