He flinched when she touched him, once again causing Lenore to wonder how he had ended up in this condition. She would ask him, but he might not remember or be willing to talk about it in this state. One thing became clear to her by his reaction to her touch. Despite the claim of the idiots from the coven, stairs had not caused his injuries. They had been inflicted by someone else.

“Who did this to you?” She whispered, thinking out loud.

After she introduced herself, he jerked his head away, causing her to retract her hand. He seemed to be embarrassed in a way.

As concerning as his coughing up blood had been, Nic had managed to get himself onto his elbows, which she hoped would be a sign that he was regaining at least a bit of strength. After she had recognized him, he looked away from her, reaffirming to her that he was embarrassed by his current position.

A sharp gasp left her mouth when he collapsed back onto the ground. His quiet and strained begging for her to help him made her heart hurt. “I will.” She promised, wanting to do whatever she could to help him even though she wasn’t sure exactly what that was. She froze, stuck in an internal debate about whether or not she should attempt to move him. Movement of any kind seemed to exacerbate his pain and he was a lot bigger than her. She didn’t want to drop him and make anything worse. Except she also didn’t think it wise for her to leave him. She stood up and looked around, hoping that she would catch a glimpse of someone, anyone, who she could call over for help. When nothing came of her search, she began pacing back and forth, hoping that eventually, something would come to her.
