Impulsive was not a word that Tae Seo Duman would use to describe himself. Especially not since the accident. Usually, he needed to take a moment to consider every possible worst-case scenario before acting on a thought or making a decision. Usually. Renlin’s comment had cut deep and struck a nerve that made Tae act almost reflexively.
Under different circumstances, maybe in a different lifetime, Renlin might have been able to fill some of the void that Isaac had left in Tae’s life. In this life, however, Tae couldn’t remember a time when his cousin didn’t resent him. As a child, he naively thought that he might be able to fix it, to make him like him. After the accident, he didn’t have the energy or willingness to continue to try and so he gave up, finally recognizing that any hope of their relationship getting better had died in the car with his brother.
Tae tried to avoid his cousin as much as possible at Wyndham but it was hard with them being in the same house. Even then, he barely said a word to him unless he absolutely had to. Renlin must have known that Tae was within earshot when he decided to make a comment that he knew would provoke him.
He was filled with adrenaline after punching Renlin and ready to keep going but he also heard his brother’s voice in the back of his head telling him not to pick fights with guys who were bigger than him. It was sound advice, however, for the time being, Tae was electing to ignore it. He saw a maniacal smile appear on his cousin’s face before he felt a blow to his eye. He was dazed for a few seconds before he geared up to hit back. He knew he wouldn’t be able to get another hit to Renlin’s face. Not with him standing up straight. Instead, he aimed for his stomach, putting his weight behind his punch.
