There were times when Hayes would be confused about what Inessa was thinking, what she was craving - just like he was in this moment. Maybe it was his own desires that tricked him into seeing something he wanted but wasn’t there. Now, Hayes has never been much of a romantic soul, but when someone you might like says something in a certain way you can’t help but wonder if there was more to it.
But surely all of his friends would be intrigued because Hayes is back.
So moving on from that conversation was a logical step and what better to bring up than what happened at the ball. Things with Hayes and Renlin have been a little weird since the last time they interacted… Since the last time they’d seen each other, back in that school hall, but Hayes wanted to try and explain everything. Or at least explain in the way that he could, that would make everything make sense but the story even to him sounded silly.
And hearing what happened, what kind of speech Renlin gave, Hayes knew something was bound to happen. Eventually. ”He tells you everything?“ But there was that one line Inessa said that made Hayes feel a little uneasy. Everything? So does that mean she knows? Did Ren tell her about finding him in that hall right before he left school? That didn’t seem possible because the two of them would be having a different kind of discussion right now.
Right?
”Are you sure?“ Something that resembled a cheeky smile reached Hayes’ lips, an attempt to cover his original reaction. To hide how for a moment her words scared him.
”But it’s Renlin we’re talking about… I’m sure he thought about you before doing that stupid thing and realized no one would think… Anything bad… About you,“ another smile, this time an attempt to reassure the girl. Hayes knew how much this all meant to her. How she was trying her best and, honestly, being the best student and girl out there. And a part of him was worried about her for that same reason… he’d just have to think of a way to help her.
”Me? I was…“ Hayes shrugged his shoulders, as if he was trying to find a way out of this conversation about him. What was he doing anyway? Really? Not much. What else was anyone expecting to hear from him? Or should he tell her how he was trying to go after a girl he thought was his ex after making… Trying to make sure she didn’t end up in this school? How something happened and he couldn’t get through to her after everyone gathered around and his path was blocked? And how after that he just stayed on the side rethinking everything? ”Enjoying the ball. You know how much I love those things,“ a sarcastic comment was all Hayes could give her.
”We have…“ Hayes glanced at the section of books he was researching earlier, before Inessa showed up. He’ll get back to it later but now it’s time to go. Getting up he reached out his hand for Nessa to take with a soft smile. ”That first class together? We should get going, and on the way you can tell me all about how much fun you had at the ball.“
