Tae nodded when Inessa declined his offer. He wasn’t sure if there was an ulterior motive but he could understand why she would decline. As much as he wanted to, Tae couldn’t shake the feeling that they were doing something they shouldn’t, especially when they were in the Umbra Coven and there were a number of people who could rat them out to Renlin.

“She was missing Isaac a lot because it’s her last year but our dad and her friends helped her through it.” He explained, carefully watching her reaction to him mentioning his brother, bracing himself for hostility. He hated that he had to do that. He should be able to speak freely about him without fearing retribution from his own family members who made him feel as if he wasn’t allowed to do so.

She tripped over her words as she tried to explain herself but then she trailed off. Then she confessed that she didn’t know why she came and when she stated that she was leaving, Tae couldn’t help but feel guilty. Maybe he should have kept that thought to himself. Except then she changed her mind, turning back to face him. He nodded when she asked him to let her know how the cream worked. She was sure it would help, but Tae couldn’t stop himself from being skeptical. If anything, it would help with what was left of his bruising.

You know, Tae, it’s funny how some people always end up needing help, isn’t it? But I’m sure you get it, considering… everything.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” He asked with a raised eyebrow, perhaps giving her a chance to rethink her words. She was insinuating something and he wasn’t sure if he liked it, or if he even knew exactly what it was. As she continued to speak, her voice adopted an sharpness but then it became sickly sweet. This change to her voice and demeanour made Tae tense up, feeling on edge.

“Tell me. What exactly do you think I’ve gotten away with? The car accident that left me permanently disabled with a lot of trauma?" He asked her, wondering if she would share her brother’s way of speaking about the accident and refuse to acknowledge that Tae was also a victim. He understood that aside from the scars hiding under his tattoo, the effects the accident had on him couldn’t be noticed by anyone other than himself. It didn’t change the fact that his body would never be the same or that he could never feel completely safe in a car again. “Or is it the fight, that your brother started when he commented on my relationship with mine? Which, by the way, he also escalated. All I did was punch him. He tried to strangle me.” He continued, responding to her comment warning him not to pull Renlin into “his mess” while trying to shield himself from the venom she was spitting.
