Lenore eyed Nic’s backpack. He was a hard-to-read person but she wasn’t stupid. She had spent enough time without a place she could call home to know what the bag was for. She looked into his dark and unrevealing eyes, trying to get even a small suggestion of his motives and wondering if the night that they met had anything to do with it.
“Is everything okay?” He would likely evade the question, it seemed to be his specialty, but Lenore felt she had to at least try. “Why don’t you come with me? I think I have the perfect thing if you need to relax for a little bit.” She offered him her hand. She would have just taken his but she worried the gesture might scare him off, as if he was a scared animal. Really, she was trying to find any reason for her to keep an eye on him and maybe even get him to tell her what the backpack was for.
She inched towards him, hoping he wouldn’t notice her closing the space between them. Her hand was still awaiting his but she thought this might make the offer more inviting. Maybe if he saw that one person here had no intention of hurting him, he wouldn’t want to leave.
When he asked about her costume, she playfully scowled. “I thought the shoes would have given it away. I’m Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.” She told him matter-of-factly, smoothing out her dress and then doing a little pose so he could get a better look at it. “I don’t see your costume so I don’t know why you’re judging me.” She pointed out, gesturing to his very normal-looking outfit, which suggested that he hadn’t come from the party like he was claiming.
