Tae furrowed his brow as Ayla described her plan as a ‘play date’, his expression reading ‘wtf is wrong with you?’. “Did you just use the words ‘fun’ and ‘play date’ to describe you waging war against my cousin?” He asked, not sure what else to make of that.

Ayla’s presence was one that Tae hadn’t known he needed. It was warm. Comforting. Understanding. She knew exactly what to say to him to dull the hurt. Her touch on his shoulder grounded him, stopping him from falling further into his thoughts. The promise that he wasn’t alone covered him like a soft blanket. Sometimes he wondered if his sister felt the same as he did but he never asked, fearing that he would be loading his problems onto her if she didn’t feel the same.

“I wrote letters to him after the accident." He responded after she told him to find something that reminded him of his brother, ending by telling him that she talks to her brother sometimes. “It was my dad’s idea. He thought it would give me something to do while I was recovering because it didn’t involve the side of my body that hurt. I only wrote a few. They just reminded me that he wasn’t here.” His voice broke at the end of his sentence.

“I guess I’m reminded of him when I play my guitar.” He told her, thinking out loud and looking over to his instrument again. “It belonged to him and he’s the one who taught me how to play. I don’t know, just knowing that he played the same instrument is comforting.”

“Okay, but if I’m going I need to smoke first. Preferably sooner rather than later.” He insisted as she dragged her basket of makeup towards them. If he was going to be in the same room as Renlin, he needed to have as much patience as possible. Which meant being in as little pain as possible. “There better not be any glitter in that basket.” He playfully threatened. He knew that if anything resembling glitter got on his bed, he’d be finding it for the rest of eternity and he did not want to deal with that.
