Pros and cons on online school

I’ve been having some hard times with online school.
I’ve been so unmotivated that it is Killing me

When all this first started 5-6 months ago, I had over 20 missing assignments and so did all my classmates.
No one joined the zooms and we all were lazy.

Now I’m so stressed it’s not funny anymore.
So I want to rant, but also discuss some positive thoughts about the zoom classes.

Here’s mine.
If you want to share your or give commentary please do.

Pros

• We get to stay at home, I can be comfortable.
• We can wear what we want.
• I have very kind teachers
• I can now study more at home if I wanted to
• I miss my friends but the time by myself I’d kind of pleasing?

Cons
• Being at home has caused me to become lazy
• Distractions are awfully common.
• Time is consuming
• Zooms are awkward sometimes.
• I am not getting much work time but more free time.
• It’s hard to learn new things.

Pros:

  • I feel comfortable in my own home
  • I don’t need to wake up to dress when I’m already at home
  • I don’t need to worry about bringing extra jackets since school buildings tend to be very cold
  • I don’t need to worry about other people
  • some people don’t need to worry about bullies
  • I don’t need to wake up as early

Cons:

  • staying at home causes more distractions
  • I tend to sleep a lot later so I wake up very tired
  • procrastination
  • the work flow changed
  • I don’t like how teachers give a doc for me to read then expect me to understand
  • it’s harder to communicate to teachers and other people

Pros:

  • Usually a faster class schedule
  • No set time to enter the class
  • You get a week to get your homework done
  • Getting a hold of the teacher is pretty easy. They usually respond by 24 hours.
  • You get to interact with the other students via the discussions blog section.

Cons:

  • If the internet goes down you have to work on your phone.
  • For some reason, the class is not setup for uploading documents from your phone.
  • You deal with glitches in the class at certain times.
  • Less time to do homework since it is usually an accelerated class.
  • It’s hard to get people to proofread your paper since it can take up to three days before they get back to you.
  • Procrastination :eyes:
  • Working time around the classes
  • Less work hours since I can’t work more than 30 something when in class
  • If you miss discussions then you can’t make them up
  • Dealing with the timezone change on the first week
  • Keeping up with the textbook readings since the textbook is kept in a separate program

These are the ones I can think of as of right now.

From a teacher’s standpoint, here are some of the pros and cons for me.

Pros:

  • Grading is easier because you don’t have to take a huge, heavy stack of notebooks to the teachers room nor have the kids line up while you check each notebook. In addition to this, kids usually either turn in completed work, or they don’t turn it in at all. But rarely do they turn something in halfway because they were too busy gossiping with their friend in the back of class or just staring off into space. The whole grading process is much more organized.
  • Discipline. There aren’t as many disciplinary issues as there are in the classroom, such as students talking to each other while I’m trying to teach, or people constantly interrupting class.
  • I can teach sitting down and my feet don’t hurt at the end of the day like when we were in person.
  • This isn’t much of an issue in middle school, but elementary and preschool students don’t cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze, so they blast their germs onto whomever is nearby, and this is how a lot of people catch colds. So that’s something we don’t have to worry about in online classes.

Cons:

  • It’s harder to develop connections with the class if we can’t see each other.
  • I can’t check a kid’s individual progress.
  • When kids don’t participate nor turn on their cameras, I don’t know if they are actually in class or just connected and left the room.
  • Kids can’t interact with their friends.
  • Internet problems
  • Sometimes it’s hard to hear what students are saying because of all the background noise.

Oh gosh it really is :grimacing::persevere:

Especially if you’re downing coffee, egg breakfast sandwiches and burritos regularly like me :flushed::sweat_smile:

Only pro that matters: having more time

Hey @Students, I know they’ve mentioned quite a number of pro and cons to online school, but what are your pros and cons?

ik it’s technically ‘gross’ but i know that for people who have been struggling with depression or just being in a really bad place it can be very hard to do normal tasks that they would usually do
