Makes sense
Black Americans have been affected by instituitionalised racism for centuries which have but them behind their non-black counterparts. Reparations are a way of making up for how they are “behind” in society as a result of slavery. Only problem is throwing money at a problem doesn’t solve it - will this reduce and irradicate police brutality, end hair discrimination etc.
Reparations are fair because not just Black Americans but African countries (and others actually) are behind as a result of colonialism so no, you can’t just WoRk HaRdEr to overcome a centuries-long setback and institutionalised racism.
It doesn’t make sense for it to be all white people because the history of colonialism differs slightly for each “western” high-income country, so basically white Australians paying reparations for Aboriginal people rather than Black Americans would make more sense imo. Also wouldn’t make sense for it to be all non-AAs because the Latinx community, Asians and Native Americans are also affected by institutionalised racism. It should be descendants of slave owners.
Both. There’s no point in funding public services if people can’t afford to go to/use them and there’s no point in raising average income for individual families if money isn’t going into their communities.
All AAs because 1. Black Americans who are Caribbean are still affected by slavery. They are literally the descendants of West Africans that survived the middle passage. 2. BAs w/ Carribean heritage are still treated as “Black” in white America and affected by racism 3. Selective justice isn’t going to help with the existing xenophobia in the black community.
YUP! First things first I’m tagging @PensiveShadow because she’s Black American so her opinion holds a lot of weight in this conversation.
Next, reparations are not racist. “We shouldn’t give people stuff because of their colour” yeah and we shouldn’t take things away from people due to their colour either. Reparations are not handouts. Are charities for the poor discriminatory towards richer classes? Is donating to children ageist? Is helping disabled people “special treatment”? Is pride anti-straight? Of course not. Helping marginalised groups overcome stunted progress due to discrimination and oppression is NOT the same as non-marginalised groups gaining things when they are already advantaged.
The BA community would not become “ahead” of everyone else they would catch up. Yeah, you should work hard to overcome struggle but individual achievement cannot overcome systemic oppression. “Work harder” implies the black community doesn’t work. We do. Instituitionalised racism means not just BAs but POC in the US have always had to work harder because their road has more obstacles in it.
Lastly I just want to ask for some basic empathy in this discussion. It’s so easy to see the title, skim the reparations definition and decide that “[black] people are too offended” and “why does everything have to be about race” and “why do [black] people always complain about racism when [non - black POC] don’t” and “[non black group] had slavery and they don’t complain” and yada yada. BASIC
RESEARCH
Basic grasps of anti-blackness and institutionalised racism would propel these discussions so far and basic understandings of blackness even more so.
Please listen to and evaluate black voices if you consider yourself an ally. Thank you.
