Chapter One: Catch Up

Kathy smiles slightly looking up from her book and looking across the table, lowering her book slightly. Snowflakes blew all around through the windows, and Kathy was glad the library invested in air-conditioning- she knew a few that didn’t. She kicked Scott’s foot back from under the table before looking down at her book, pretending she just realized that Galileo was a very important astronomer. It had been two years since they left camp, they were both 21 and went to their own respective colleges- well Kathy knew she went to college. She didn’t quite know what Scott was doing with his life, he kept it a secret. Kathy studied in New York, for Aerospace Engineering, meanwhile Scott studied- well whatever he did.

They rarely saw each other outside of winter break, volunteering at camp every now and again- and it wasn’t as if they could pick up the phone and call. It was more along the lines of letters- and that took a rather long time. Despite the fact they were away for a very long time they always talked and had fun as if they just each other the day before. The letters helped. But now, Scot was in New York for some sort of school project thing she had no idea about. (but like mysterious OOoooOOOoo)

They were good friends, some may say best friends, but nothing ever more. The topic of being more was one that had never been brought up- and it had no reason too. After all, she lived in New York he lived in Scotland so even if there was something there - which Kathy was sure there wasn’t - how do you maintain a long-distance relationship without having anything as mere as a phone? The kick that Scott returned was expected, Kathy flipped the page while returning the favor.

“Ow!” Scott complains before being glared at, it wasn’t exactly his first time being loud in the library. The librarian lowered her glasses at Scott who stared back at his book rather annoyed at the library. Kathy snickers slightly as she reads. “ ‘at hurt!” Kathy shakes her head, still looking at the book.

“You should be studying,” Kathy whispers. “Whatever…it is that you study.” She says as shadow hand attempted to lift up the book to see the cover. Damnit. Kathy thinks to herself as the hand disperses before attention could be caught, it had one of those book cover things you applied to keep the cover from being damaged.

“Nae lass,” Scott says waving the shadow hand away from the book. “I’ve told ye, I’m not tellin’ ye.”

“Why? I mean, it can’t be that bad.”

“ ‘Is correct, nothin’ special. Should be no interest of ya.” Scott answers as he closes the book. “It’s been a few hours, A am bored, let’s go.” Kathy shrugs, placing a loose strand of hair behind her ear before standing up, closing her book lightly.

“Yeah, let’s go.” Kathy says, her voice still quiet saving her from the wicked looks the others shot Scott. “Where to then?” She places her book on one of the carts and looked back towards Scott to see the book he had in his hand disappear.

“ ‘at ‘coffee shop we passed by here, it’s close aye?” Scott asks leaning against one of the shelves. He smiles at Kathy. “Let’s go then.” To the relief of the annoyed students, Kathy and Scott shrugged on their jackets and met the New York winter’s fury. Kathy was quiet as they walked, admiring the beautiful snowflakes that danced around in the wind. “Aerospace Engineerin’, gods that’s a mouthful, how’s it going?” Scott asks Kathy looking downwards at her. Scott could’ve sworn she saw some sort of paling as they approached the coffee shop before she looked up at him and offered him a shy smile.

“Complicated, extremely difficult…” Kathy trails off. “But I think I’m doing fine.” She shrugs slightly at the end. Her posture stiffens slightly as they walk towards the coffee shop, although Kathy was often hesitant she wasn’t this reclunctant. She began to fiddle with the ends of her coat, refusing to look at Scott’s questioning glance. “I-i got an internship at this company, they don’t pay me much but- I …. Learn a lot.” Kathy says absentmindedly.

“A am sure there’s more going on here,” Scott remarks as they walk into the simple coffee shop, the heat warming their faces.

“No…t-there’s nothing. Everything’s fine.” Kathy stammers slightly as they sit down at one of the tables. “I’m just nervous, we’re having a project and stuff and I’m just…nervous.”

“Nae, ye always do fine, tell me, why are you lyin’ Kathy?” Kathy didn’t speak, her lips pressed tightly together leaving Scott sighed in response. “Nevermind then, what’re we gettin’?” Scott asks as they approach the counter of the coffee shop.

“Ummm,” Kathy bit her lip, deep in thought for a moment before she shrugged. “Whatever, I guess.”

“C’mon, yer the native here, help me out an’ choose somethin’’.” Kathy flushed still shrugging.

“I don’t even come here that often, I’m not really sure…” Kathy whispered quietly trailing off, Scott noticing, took Kathy aside to avoid the rude remarks from the other customers still waiting in line, of course not without shooting them a rather deadly look. Kathy fiddled with the edge of her scarf as she stumbled with her words. “W-well I m-mean, it’s a normal coffee shop, just get some coffee.”

“Ye rarely come ‘ere? Why’s that?” Scott asked, a frown settling on Kathy’s face from all the nervous hesitantly. Scott knew this was the closest coffee shop to her dorm, precisely why he had insisted on coming here.

“I-I…H-he, I-I,” Kathy paused as the bell to the coffee shop rings and her eyes darted towards it. Kathy’s face paled significantly as she moved closer to the wall as if to hide in the shadows in which it harbored.

“Kathy? What’s wrong. Who’s he?” Scott asked, noticing the slight tremor from her hands as she never takes her eyes of the door. Scott followed her gaze to a well-dressed black haired boy dressed in a fancy suit. The boy was a little shorter than Scott, taller than Kathy but definitely not older than the both of them. Perhaps 2 or 3 years older at most? Kathy stared at the floor, almost fading into the shadows before solidifying again. Scott saw her thought process, and appluaded her for catching herself before she could display paranormal activity. (I know. Genius.)

“Kathy!” The boy’s face had a slight frown in his eyes that marred his broad grin as he approached the both of them. “I haven’t seen you in forever!” He walked towards them, in an excited manner, Kathy hid her hands behind her back but she clenched them tightly, her knuckles bone white.

“That’s not such a bad thing,” Kathy responded matter-of-fact. “Just means we’ve been busy with our lives.” Kathy finishes shortly, the cold manner unbefitting the usual friendly person.

“Not even going to ask me how’s it going? I see how it is.” The boy put on a fake pout which does nothing to sober the effect of Kathy’s withdrawn coldness. “Anyway’s, who this?”

“How are you?” Kathy bit out before turning to Scott, who the boy appraised before looking him up and and down in disdain. “This is one of my friends, Scott. Scott, Thomas.” Kathy introduced them with very little to add to.

“Thomas, pleasure,” Thomas said as he held out his hand to Scott although his eyes conveyed it was anything but. Scott shook it firmly but didn’t hold onto the pale hand for a moment longer than required to be polite, he was picking up cues from Kathy and from her attitude he decided there was something…unappealing about this Thomas person.

“Aye…likewise,” Scott replied as Kathy interupts.

“I’m going to grab our drinks and then me and Scott shall be out.” Kathy said, before turning around. The tension could be cut with a knife, and without another second to pass, Kathy left uncermoniously. As soon as she goes to the register, all pretense of friendliness dropped from Thomas’s demeanor as he speaks in an inquisitive fashion. “Friends, huh? Where’d you guys meet then?”

“A met Kathy at a summer camp,” Scott paused, still looking straight at Thomas in the eye. “About 3 years now.”

“Really where?”

“A don’t see how that benefits ye, why don’t ye ask Kathy, aye?” Scott said bluntly, refusing to give details of their camp. Camp Half-Blood.

“Are you guys dating?”

“An’ ye need this why?”

“Just curious, must you be so secretive?” Scott stared at Thomas incredously, the boy was giving him questions like he was the damn FBI. At this point, Scott decided there was a very obvious reason why Kathy disliked Thomas, he was rather nosy, and there was something sinister about the way he acted.

“Hey, ready to go?” Kathy asked as she returns to the pair, Scott’s arms folded across his chest and Thomas’s hands deep in his pockets, the silence loud. She shifted from foot to foot as Thomas turned his gaze to her before handing Scott his drink.

“Oh yes, just getting to know Scotty here.” Thomas smiled, although it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. Thomas glanced at the cups in Kathy’s hands and a frown slipped back onto his face. “No drink for me.”

“I only have to two hands,” Kathy snapped at him before pausing. “Besides I didn’t know if you wanted one- nor am I made out of gold.” Scott looked at the drink, reading the side, above the bartender’s phone number was the drink’s title: Pumpkin Spice Latte.

“Well, I mean, you could’ve just asked-”

“ ‘ere,” Scott said, his annoyance reaching his peak as he basically thrusts the cup into Thomas’s hands. “Enjoy yer day then, A think me an’ Kathy will be goin’ now.” Scott said as Kathy tugged on Scott’s arm, rather restless to leave, leading him towards the door. Scott also doesn’t miss the glare pointed at Scott, as if it was his fault Kathy disliked Thomas. (Of course it is Scott. It is.)

“Bye.” Kathy said, not sparing a glance backwards to Thomas. Kathy seemed to relax slightly at they walk further from the coffee shop, her hand not leaving Scott’s arm. Not that he minded. (He better not.)

“Mind tellin’ me what that was?” Scott asked curiously, Kathy gritted her teeth before biting out.

“An assh0le.” Kathy said, not bothering to soften her words. “He was a student at the college. Until he went and revealed his true colors and now he is a person I avoid. All the time. Or else I may violently rip his limbs from him by tying them to several horses.” She paused after her graphic description before looking up at Scott, a small smile found it’s way to her mouth. “Thank you though, for dealing with him. He is…a handful.”

“What did the lad do? Somethin’ to ye? Should A break his bones?” Kathy shakes her head to Scott’s response. “A frien’ then, aye?” Scott said, and assumed Kathy’s nod was a good enough ansewer.

“He tried to do something stupid to me, but by then, I figured him out.” Kathy explained before stopping at a park bench and sitting down. “But he’s no longer a student, yet he tries to catch me every now and again.”

“Are ye sure yer fine?”

“I’m fine,” Kathy said laughing slightly. “I can defend myself.”

“A know that,” Scott said laughing slightly, he waas not unfamiliar with Kathy’s ability to defend herself, after all, she trained with other demigods and her umbrakinesis was a force to be rivaled with. (We’d like to think so, wouldn’t we?)

“Here,” Kathy said, giving Scott her drink. It was a regular lemonade, void of any number that could’ve been placed on it. “I haven’t drank from it yet, so don’t worry.”

“Thank ye,” Scott says beginning to drink as Kathy watched the cars pass by. “Yer not thirsty?”

“Nah, I lost any will to eat or drink.” Kathy responded shrugging. Scott nodded although he noticed something black weaving around the chair, as if it was sticking to the snow that fell. “Kathy…have you been practicin’?”

“What? No.” Kathy looks down at her hands and frowned as she clenched her hands forcing the shadows to disapear. “Damn. It’s the winter solstice tonight, my powers will be insane.” She explained sticking her hands in her jacket. Scott was silent for a moment, before asking.

“We ‘ave some time,” Scott remarked checking his watch, only 7:30. “Anythin’ fun ye usually do here?” Kathy’s face lights up before speaking.

“There’s a movie theater here, a new movie came out I’ve really been wanting to watch! Can we go? Let’s go!” Kathy rambles excitedly as she jumps up from the bench. Scott chuckles, it was times like this she seemed almost child-like.

“Aye, lead the way lass.”

Entering the theater, once again awwayyyy from the cold, Kathy’s demeanor had completely changed from the coffee shop. Scott wore his specialty EDC, Echo Designer Sunglasses. Kathy had left to grab the tickets, and popcorn, and candy, and- well he forgot the rest but apparent essientals needed to enjoy a movie. (FOOOOODDDDDDD)

Leaning against the wall Scott looks outside the window, enjoying the view from Echo’s Designer Sunglasses. (Patened and Trademarked-), when he got sight of a person slinking in the shadows around the movie theater, Scott frowned as he watched closer only for his mouth to drop open and be surprised. “Holy Hades,” Scott whispers as he caught a glimpse of what seemed to be Thomas. What was he was doing here? But before Scott could verify that was really him, the shadow was gone. Must’ve been a trick of the night and light. Scott thinks to himself.

“Scott. Scott. You okay?” Kathy’s voice came to him much slower than it should’ve and he looked down at her to see a concerned face. “Are you alright?”

“Ye, A am good lass,” Scott says with a slight smile as he glanced at the tickets in her hands. “Ready.”

“Ready!” Kathy smiles as she dragged Scott in the direction of one of the movies theater room things, (what were they called? Lord knows.) Scott allowed himself to be dragged but he couldn’t shake the ominous feel of somthing wrong, could it perhaps be connected to why he was here again?

The movie was fine, but Kathy was overly emotional during the entire movie. (See the Thinnning.) She had cried halfway and didn’t stop even when the movie was over- which usually would cause her to be embarrased but she didn’t mind right now. So, in the empty movie theater room, after Scott had worked his magic, Kathy had time to recover and they managed to turn on the lights. Scott was being patient even as Kathy remincesed over the sad parts of the movies and a few of the happy parts which made him laugh. She was adorable. (Well I hope so. That’s kinda her thing.)

“He said, ‘I’m having trouble with this question,’ and t-they,” Kathy blubbered slightly before wiping her face and laughing slightly. “That was really sad.” Scott partly wanted to point out they experienced sadder, worst things, and although he hadn’t gotten teary while watching the movie, resigning himself to becoming Kathy’s tissue box holder, he had to admit it was slightly sad. Slightly.

Popcorn kernels littered the floor and seats meanwhile 3 empty buckets laid around the floor, knocked over by the people who had ran by. “Ye don cryin’ there then, mo chaileag sgàil?” Scott asked patting her shoulder, quite unsure of how to react. “Yer the only one ‘at cried in the entire movie theater, that’s good though, it means you cared.” Scott cringed at his weak attempt to make her feel better.

“I’m fine,” Kathy replied, and sat up cross-legged in the chair. “I’d be embarrased, but by now you’ve already seen me be an emotional person.” She smiles slightly, shrugging before placing a strand of hair behind her ear. “How’d you get them not to come in here to clean afterwards anyways?” Scott tilts his head slightly as his face takes on the appearance of a new person, a Kathy lookalike. “That’s creepy.”

Scott laughed and shook his head, “Aye, but it helps.”

“Thanks for stopping by on your visit here,” Kathy trails off. “I appreciate it.” Scott smiles back although a nagging feeling enters the back of his mind, if only she knew.

“Nae problem, A rather like ye,-” Scott’s ears turns pink as he realises what he said completely. “Well an’ the city, an’ New York…not that A don’t like visitin’ ye- A do.” Scott tripped over his own rudes only interrupted by Kathy’s laugh.

“It’s fine Scott, I get what you mean. I enjoy seeing you too.” Kathy finished staring at her lap. “So Ainsely? How’s she?” She asks looking up.

“The lass is fine, she’s doing school, and enjoys it. More than A do.” Scott responded quietly. Kathy nodded, the silence stretching over, something had changed…something. (EWwww why’d you write that. slaps self) Scott ran a hand through his ginger hair, meeting Kathy’s eyes.

“And you?”

“A am fine.” Kathy is quiet to Scott’s response for a long time, before studying him. (which is weird. Why do people do this-) She looked at his ginger hair, one she’d admired for awhile. It had grown a bit longer, he’d cut it soon. His eyes were a warm brown and they darted around her face…settling on her lips. (WHYYYY SCOTTTTTT). “I um- you…” Scott spoke quietly trailing off muttering something under his breath that Kathy couldn’t quite decipher.

Kathy leaned forward, unable to percieve what he said. “You…said something?” Kathy asked quizzically, her eyebrows knitted together unware of how Scott’s ears matched his hair.

“Nevermind, it’s…nothin’ important.” Scott replied softly, and suddenly noticed their close proximity which caused her to go red too. (Cinnabons yay!) His face was closer to hers and she didn’t quite know what to do, she couldn’t deny she really wanted to kiss him. She had before, for a long time, and she thought those feelings had long since faded. (Key word: thought) but they hadn’t, besides, did it matter? Thousands of thoughts ran rampant, kiss or to not kiss? What if he didn’t like her that way, she didn’t want to ruin their friendship over that, she valued their friendship. Her heart beated abbnormally quick. No it wasn’t.

“Okay then,” Kathy’s response was barely above a whisper as she retreats, moving back, yet it seemed like Scott had other plans (of course he did.) which involved him leaning forward and pressing his lips softly to hers, his hand placed on her cheek. Kathy didn’t quite know how to react (Good goin’ Kathy. ), her only reaction being the widened eyes from when Scott began the action.

Her lack of response brought Scott to confusion, having him break the kiss. (Like any normals gentleman.) “Bloody Hell, Kathy,” Scott’s face twisted into a frown as he looked at Kathy. “Gods, sorry, A thought-” Kathy never lets him finishes his words. (where’d that confidence come from cinnamonroll?? -_-) This time she quieted Scott by carresing his lips with hers, her heart felt as if it was going to explode as Scott returned the favour, devouring her lips without doing her harm. A feeling of warmth spread out throughout Kathy like a wildfire as Kathy tasted candy in her mouth Sound seemed non-existent in the room besides their breathing and the creaking of the movie the movie theater’s chairs as Kathy leaned forward to return Scott’s kiss. The kiss was a gentle one, with no one striving to dominate the other. Kathy didn’t realize how much time had passed until their lips parted, nor did she mind. Quiet ensues them as they break the kiss and seperate from each other.

“A assume then ye had issue with the kiss then,” Scott asked after a moment of silence, a small smirk found a way to settle on his mouth. (Wow, Scott, real smooth.)

“N-no.” Kathys tammered her face turning red to the roots of her hair (cinnamon roll, your innocence will be missed).

Suddenly the doors are thrown open as a very angry looking man walks into the room. “This place looks like a garbage dump- Gregor!” Kathy freezed before turning around. “What the hell are you two doing in here? Your generation needs to get an actual room, not a movie theater room-”

“We didn’t do anything like that,” Kathy screamed her face completely red. “That is f-cking disgusting.” (I agree Kathy. I agree.) Scott didn’t quite know whether to laugh or throw up, he went with niether.

“Glad you think so too kid, now. GET OUT!” The manager yelled stamping his foot and pointed towards the exit door.

5 minutes later, Kathy and Scott greet the cold, their coats left behinf, which was disapointing. But expected.

“We got banned from the movie theater for the next 3 months,” Kathy said chuckling slightly.

“A don’t mind,” Scott smiled at her as he interwined his fingers with hers. “A would ‘ave done it again.” Scott finished as he and Kathy walked down to her college dorm. (? How do dorms work? Is this allowed?) But Kathy couldn’t help the the thought that sat silently in the back of her mind, although she should’ve been happy, she was not.

When they reached the the door of her dorm she lightly shook off his hand, confused slightly, Scott let go. She didn’t meet his eyes as she looked at her hands and asked the question that sat in the back of her mind. “What happens now? You’re leaving to Scotland, and this changes everything. W-what are we now? Friends? Something else?” Kathy asked.

Scott’s eyebrows raised in suprise at Kathy’s question, he hadn’t thought of that, he looked away before his eyes come to settle on Katy

“What do ye mean Kathy?” Scott asked quietly.

“You know what I mean!” Kathy said, exasperated. “You’re not even staying for thtat long, you’re heading back home. Where does that leave us?” Kathy finished her voice barely above a whisper.

“Kathy…” Scott trailed off, not quite sure what to say, because she was right. Kathy looked down at her shoes and stared at the patterned floor. Scott didn’t know what to say but he didn’t want to appear helpless. “Nothin’ really changes-” Scott began although the words he spoke were empty lies and he hated them.

“Nothing changes? Really?” Kathy asked, the words bitter in her mouth. “So what was the kiss for t hen? Fun? Gods Scott… wow. I don’t even know what to say.” She turned away.

“KathY!” Scott reached for Kathy’s arm who shook it off and didn’t bother to open the door, rather shadow-traveling straight through.
