“Listen Booker i’m just going to say this and change the subject ok. I figured that you not smoking the cigarette will like save your life, I know there is a good chance you will still get cancer no matter what.” He was glad she’d like to change the subject, but he had to stop her. He immediately cut in and said “No, you got it wrong. That’s what I’ve been telling you. If I avoid everything bad in my life, including smoking and many of the cancerous things that I can reasonably avoid, that doesn’t guarantee I won’t get cancer and die young. People often get it wrong, so I don’t blame you. It’s just that most people think it’s the same as any other disease where you have to avoid a few things in your life and that means you’re safe. Like if you have high colesterol you keep away from fats, but cancer doesn’t work in absolutes like that. The point is,If I watch out I’m still likely to get a cancer and die young. But go on with changing the subject.” He really does want to change the subject, he just wanted to make that one thing clear to her.
She started telling him the story of how often she was in a hospital in her life, and about her bad mother. He nodded and at the end he said “That was very brave of you, Elena. I mean, nobody would trust their mother to drive them in your shoes.” He joked. “But seriously. You went through a lot, it seems. So this is the second fire you’ve been in? That could be a sign. Did you consider the universe is telling you that you should become a firefighter?” He didn’t know how to respond to her that wasn’t pity, so he opted for jokes. He knows that joking about his condition often makes him feel much better, so he hopes the same applied to her. Otherwise I’d be better if he just didn’t respond at all.
"“Listen Booker, this may be hard but I think you need to give her a few days and she will come back to you and ralk to you. When she does then talk or ask her about that picture. It probably is not what it looks like, even though that is not the best look in that picture. Don’t jusge a book by it’s cover.” Booker looked at her after that response with an ‘are you serious?’ look on his face. “Elena, I know that Blaire is your cousin, but come on.” He pointed to the pose on the phone. “How can you tell me that this is accidental? She sent it the second after I unsucesfully called her. The message was clear. You can’t convince me that photo was innocent or not what it seems. You can try, give me a plausible explanation for that photo. I’m sure if you ever found yourself in that phose acidentally, you never took a selfie of it, so even if you do manage to explain the pose somehow, the selfie negates it’s innocence.” Booker shook his head disapprovingly. “When she comes back, you say? I don’t know if I want her to come back. It’s clear that she’s either cheating or trying to make me jealous like that, but seeing that photo, and thinking about Blaire now makes me sick to my stomach. Thinking about her also makes my head throbb. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still some feelings there, but I can’t just get over this photo like it’s nothing. Believe me, I tried thinking like you. Wondering if it was innocent, telling myself it isn’t what it looks like, but whenever I tried to find a reasonable explanation, it never came. Who knows how many photos would come next had I not blocked her number … I just couldn’t face getting anything that ruthless again. I’m fragile, I know, but I think that would’ve been deadlier than any cancerous thing in my life.”
ORP: @Kate - don’t actually try to convince him that the photo is innocent, we want them broken up for a while, so she’ll just have to think it’s not innocent.
