What types of shading are there? Is it just how subtle it is or are their more differences?
What type of shading do you guys like best to see and what shading do you use when making art? Do you think shading in art in necessarily to have a good art piece?
I wanna invite @anon68003072 and @MeghanWrites specifically to this thread since we’ve had conversations about this before!
I like my pictures to be 2D personally so no shading. because I think it matches my style more tbh. I definitely don’t think shading is necessary for a good art piece, but it does look nice.
Personally I’m someone who’s for either no or very very subtle shading or as realistic as possibly shading, but yeah it’s important that you choose a type of shading that fits you.
In general I find the quality of line work in subtle shading art pieces more important than pieces with all out shading, since you just notice instability in the lines way easier, but that said art without shading can definitely be very nice and refreshing to look at in some way.
Shading isn’t only about shadows but also creating depth in art pieces, however I partially agree with you that the shading of the nose is easily overdone and I have to remind myself to not take it too far (and even then if I look back on it later it doesn’t always look right)
Often that’s how I do it as well, and I kinda feel like that is the right way since you really do it a way that is your unique style if you just follow your intuition.
The best way is to just study how light and shading works until you understand it and then shade every art piece individually in my opinion. My shading style usually completely depends on what I’m drawing, but most of the time I prefer lighter shading
