In anger?

Yeah. What exactly are you supposed to do? Obviously not get on top of them.

Exactly. Whenever I’m having a meltdown, my sisters speak to me very calmly till I calm down.

Is it ok to make physical contact?

It depends on what caused the meltdown. I’m not super affectionate with my siblings tbh

I see. I haven’t had a meltdown in a while.

As someone recently diagnosed as Autistic, I know a lot of autistic people and none of them act the way Sia made Maddie do in the clips I saw.

From my impression of the clips, it seems that in some ways she’s trying to say that Music lives in a fastasy world???
As well as that, the whole restraining thing just seems brutal and unnessecary. When a small child is throwing a tantrum, you don’t get on top of them and not allow them to move. You talk to them calmly.

According to what I’ve seen, the movie is more about Zu moaning about how difficult it is to cope with Music than it is about Music herself.
It doesn’t seem geared towards autistic people, rather than the families of autistic people, giving them a reason to victimize themselves and complain about how horrible it is to have an autistic kid, which it isn’t at all.

To disclaim this ^ I haven’t seen the movie and don’t plan to, this is what I’ve gathered from little clips and other people’s reactions

She’s just making excuses for herself, she didn’t try getting an autistic actor.

Y’know Maddie cried because she thought people would hate her if she took the part. That’s messed up.

I’m pretty sure she said at some point that she planned for Maddie to take the roll from the start
ie the autistic actor she ‘hired’ was just a means to not look as sh!tty

She said she ‘didn’t have enough time to find another autistic actress’ like having an autistic actress isn’t essential. :woman_facepalming:

It’s is extremely essential because having a non autistic person act like us is offensive. No matter how you look at it.

It’s the only way to properly portray something
And when people try to say stuff like: “She’s acting it’s the same as pretending to have a broken leg or be a villain” - It’s not. It’s not just pretending to be an emotion or have a physical imparement. It’s a neurological disorder that can’t be copied or represented by anyone other than someone who has it

Exactly! And having an autistic actress would be such a huge stepping stone for them in acting. I can’t believe she thought it would be OK to have Maddie do the part and have nobody be pissed about it.

It just hurts seeing this stuff and talking about it because it’s a reminder to me about how people used to copy my autistic behaviors that I couldn’t do anything about.

Not to mention that there where a lot of autistic actors who wanted to take the job… This would have been such a great opportunity for all of us

yea
I’m slowly realising that the ‘bullies’ in my old school who made weird noises at me were mimicking the way I spoke

And the fact that people STILL ignore and belittle us is infuriating
