so I just read that Halle Bailey has been cast as Ariel in the new live action the little mermaid.
I have a bit mix of feelings about this.
Not that much about her been Ariel. if they give her red hair I am good. I still a bit the but that is not how she looks in the movie so I am angry over that. but it’s not like I am really angry over it. and I am not against her been Ariel
My big problem is the little mermaid is a Danish story. By famous author Hans Christian Andersen.
And I am worried that Disney will not make The little mermaid happening in Denmark. I know we have yet to hear anything about the movie so they might.
But if they dont I will feel very insulted. and it will actually be the third time they take one of H.C Andersen’s stories. and make it not Danish
They have already done that with two of his stories.
The frog prince. named the princess and the frog. and the snow queen. named Frozen
Especially with frozen. I know the mountain scene would look stupid here in Denmark because we dont have any. But making it happen in Norway was not right.
People would lose there mind if they made Mulan happen in Japan. or how about Superman Canadian.
I know there two stories are not following the original story but are their own version. that is why its not something I am angry over.
I love both movies they are amazing(that is most Disney movies) and I dont want them to change at all. but these are stories from my country that I grew up with.
But the little mermaid does follow the original version (well except the part where she dies in the end) so not making it Danish. well it’s just not right
she is going to do great as Ariel. Look at Brandy, she played as Cinderella. I want to see a lot of representation with our black community, and more diversity.
Look at Will Smith, played Genie and he did great. So, Halle will be awesome playing as Ariel.
The actors don’t need to look exactly like the character in the movie, but hm, I would say let’s see how well they will do in the movie.
The thing is that Disney does that a lot. But I think the point is that it doesn’t matter where you set the story. It’s a made up fantasy kingdom, anyway! And there’s nothing significantly Danish about the Disney version of the story that they’d need to set it in Denmark. Not like Mulan where the story is about the Chinese struggle against the Huns.
Also, Frozen is very different from The Snow Queen. Inspired by it, for sure, but the story is very different.
Personally, I think there’s no need for live action films. The originals were good enough
I just feel like we need to create more Princesses of Color instead of just replacing original ones with different races. They’re just using this as a profiting tool to get black people to watch it.
The culture of Agrabah is distinctly Arab, though. You couldn’t set the story in India without drastically changing the story. But there’s nothing significantly Danish that would mean the story would change if it wasn’t set in Denmark. That’s what I mean. And even then: the live action Jasmine is half Indian and half English. She’s not an Arab. And the genie is a black guy.
