Lila was standing there holding hands with John. She couldn’t believe how much he reminded her of Owen. Maybe that’s why it was so easy to hold his hand in the moment. Lila spaced out as they stood there… Remembering her last conversation with Owen. It was half finished sentences and him talking a lot about Chicago. Since she hadn’t seen him in days… She thought he was gone… gone for good. Owen was the first and only guy she had ever willingly kissed. The first guy to make her feel things… like love… like being happy… like she was worth something more than sex. That meant more to her than he would ever know, see or believe.
She stood there thinking back to their first kiss as boyfriend and girlfriend. The way she felt. The way he tasted. The way his lips felt on hers. She felt her phone vibrate in her pocket which brought her back to reality. She was scared to look at it. She knew only one person ever called or texted her and that was Owen. She figured it was just him saying he made it to Chicago safely. However, she decided to take her phone out anyways. She let go of John’s hand and took her phone out to her pocket. She looked at the message… what she saw shocked her to the core. Omg! He is still here. What if he saw me with John! She thought as she stood there. She reread his message.
Owen![]()
We need to talk. Meet me outside the gym in 10?
She must have reread it a dozen times as she stood there frozen in place with her mouth opened wide in shock. She wondered if she should respond or just go to the gym. She wasn’t sure what to do. It felt like she stood there frozen forever. John and her were suppose to go back to the gym to find his hat… What if John came in there and sees her with Owen. It’s bad enough Owen probably saw her with John. She didn’t tell John about Owen yet. She thought he was gone for good though. At least she hadn’t done anything more then brush hands, or hold hands with him. Maybe there was a little flirting going on, but was that such a bad thing. Lila’s mind raced with all kind of thoughts. She looked at the phone again. Staring at the message blankly.
If she was being honest… She was in love with Owen. Hell, all day while she was with John, all she could think about was Owen. How much John was like Owen, the tallness, the basketball playing… living far away… being sweet… wanting her to go back to his home town with him. They were a like in so many ways. How was this even possible. She read his message one last time. Then she thought Meet me outside the gym in 10 minutes. She looked at how long ago the message was sent. It had already been five minutes. She looked up at John… She probably looked as if she seen a ghost to him. What came next wasn’t easy at all for her.
Part of her wanted to stay here with John… The other part knew she had to go to Owen. She took a deep breath and swallowed hard before speaking. “John… I’m so sorry. I have to go do something real quick… I can’t explain right now… I will later I promise…” She wanted to give him her number, but wasn’t sure if he wanted it, or how to give it to him. She then decided to just tell him her number and hope he texts her later. “My number is 313-555-6289… text me” She hoped he had pulled his phone out when she said my number is… She also hoped he put it in his phone before she took off. She glanced back at John as she ran to the gym. She had to talk to Owen and she knew it. Not just because he said “We need to talk” but because she felt they needed to talk as well. She reached the gym out of breath with just a minute or two before the 10 minutes was up. She stood there outside the gym catching her breath. She had to see if he really was still here… Was this real…
