Saphira had never imagined herself in this position - looking at her whole life through the car window, the light green house she called “home” disappearing from view with each passing second. Her eyes searched in between the trees until the sight was no more, her knuckles growing white from clenching her purse strap. Deep down she was livid at her parents for sending her away, but at the same time she couldn’t help but feel relieved. She had craved freedom for the longest time, away from the web of lies she was entangled in. It was not hard for her to say goodbye to her parents but saying goodbye to nana really tore her apart internally. Nana was her rock, her safe-space, she was there her entire life and nobody was as special to Saphira. Tearing her eyes away from the car window, she reached for her phone, looking for a distraction from her complex emotions. She messaged someone who she trusted, despite never meeting him in person - Diego.
Saphira: Well it’s done, I’m on my way to the airport.
The drive to Havana was silent at first, but she noticed her bodyguard glancing back at her through the mirror, finally Saphira broke the ice. “I see you looking at me Daniel, penny for your thoughts?”. Turning around to face you he asks, “How are you feeling?”, he paused before continuing, “You know with this new school? New place?”. Saphira placed a finger on her chin, thinking, “Where is this school again? Michigan?”. Daniel let out a hearty laugh before regaining his composure and clearing his throat, “No, it’s in Delaware”. Raising an eyebrow, she tried to pinpoint where exactly in America this “Delaware” was to no avail. She shrugged, answering, “Well, you’ll be with me, I’ll leave the directions to you”. Turning her attention back to the window, the airport was now in sight.
Her flight arrived on a Sunday, giving Saphira time to refresh herself before her first classes on Monday.
Monday
Daniel had insisted on dropping her to school, walking with her all the way to the school’s entrance. He glanced down at her and smiled, “If you need anything just call”, before pivoting his feet and walking back to the car. Saphira gazed up at the school, admiring its architecture. She wasn’t quite ready to go inside yet and she had about an hour before her first class, so she decided to sit on a bench to reorganize her thoughts. Once she was done, she decided to walk around the school grounds, taking in the new scenery. Lost in her thoughts, her foot had gotten stuck in between the cobblestone pathway, sending her, her phone, and her notepad flying.
