How to deal with your annoying aunt flow

General tips

  1. Keep spare underwear in your purse or backpack.
For those unexpected periods that cause your underwear to look like the red sea.
  2. Keep extra tampons or pads with you
Even if you donā€™t need it, itā€™s girl code to help another girl out if they are in need of one.

Tips against cramps

  1. Do some light exercise
Yeah, so you probably donā€™t feel like moving at all when on your period , but it actually has a lot of benefits. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins, a hormone that makes you feel good. Those endorphins can counteract the bad hormones that give you cramps (prostaglandins).
  2. Use a heating pad or take a warm bath
Putting a heating pad on your pelvic area helps stimulates blood flow and lessens pain from cramps. You can also do this by just taking a warm bath as well.
  3. Up your iron levels
Due to you losing quite a bit of blood during your time of the month, your iron levels tend to dip .So eating food that contains lots of iron can help compensate with this. Think about foods like; spinach, steak and kale.
  4. Eat some dark chocolate.
Dark chocolate (good dark chocolate with a high cacao percentage) contains magnesium which helps fight cramps.
  5. Invest in some ginger tea
Ginger tea has quite a bit of benefit and often helps with nausea. It can also help reduce inflammation and pain that makes cramps feel worse.

Things to avoid during your period

  1. Alchol
It can cause your period to become irregular and also increase oestrogen levels in the body, worsening period symptoms. Itā€™s diuretic nature also increases your water retention levels, making you appear more bloated.

  2. Caffeinated drinks
Caffeinated drinks like coffee can contribute to increased breast tenderness during your period . Additionally, caffeine blocks the downer"neurotransmitter, which results in anxiety and increased heart rate, escalating symptoms of PMS.

  3. Fried foods and foods with high salt content in general
The hormone responsible for menstruation already causes water retention and a lot of sodium will cause a gassy, bloating feeling.

There are more, but these are the most important in my opinion .Also itā€™s not like you will die if you donā€™t avoid them

Eat chocolate for cramps and make sure the chocolate is a lil bit melted.

Oh, and a friend of mine gave the tip to use the Japenese flag to announce your period, in a subtle way :jp: Not sure how you would go about that, but hey if it might help people. :woman_shrugging:

Hahaha yes, it means danger!

Do you ever sleep for a very long time when you get your periods? Also, do you get period leaves?

Yes, Iā€™m much more tired on my period so if I can, I sleep longer. Fewer hours awake with pain.

And period leaves??

Same here. When someone tries talking to me, I always give them that ā€œsorry out of orderā€ face meaning to not talk to me before I bite them.

Period leave is when you get paid when you get your period. So if youā€™re at work and the periods are getting painful, boss lets you go home for a couple of days. I think itā€™s a thing in the UK, Iā€™m not sure. Some people act like itā€™s a bad thing.

Omg that would be amazing!!! Nope, havenā€™t had it where Iā€™ve worked in the US and Iā€™m now looking for a job in France but havenā€™t heard of that here (though their vacation policy is much better than the US).

And I see how people might think itā€™s a bad thing (especially those who donā€™t get a period), but Iā€™m always for kinder treatment of workers. I got so stressed at my last job, my period went from being every 28-30 days to every 40-45. It was awful and realizing workers are humans and not machines is necessary to be successful in the long run I think. So Iā€™m all for it, honestly.

I feel like this is a stupid question. When girls use tampons, do they really lose their virginity?

My Mum says her friends have reccomended a certain painkiller which directly targets period pain. I canā€™t remember the name of it but apparently it really helps so Iā€™ll find out the name and when I start trying it Iā€™ll let you guys know.

Thatā€™s weird. I thought period leave would be a thing in other countries but Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s been implemented in the UK but I think in some countries they do give you a paid period week. I think itā€™s a good idea because what if the pain gets super painful and you didnā€™t bring any spare knickers (panties) with you that can leave you no choice but to leave work? Some people donā€™t get it.
