The Grammar Guide

Your and You’re

This is one of the most common mistakes people make when writing online. So let me clear it up for you!

Unless you are talking about names or other nouns, the apostrophe (') is usually there to tell you that there is a letter or two missing.

That’s the main clue to help you separate them properly! “You’re” is telling you that there is a letter missing!

You’re

You’re is short for “you are”. If you can replace the word “you’re” with “you are”, and the sentence still makes sense, then it’s this one you should be using. For example: “ you’re funny” or “ you’re my best friend”.

Your

“Your” is a possessive word. That means you use it when you’re talking about what the person you’re talking to owns. For example: “ your boyfriend” or “ your name”.

Hopefully, that helps!
