If you have questions there or you want me to check over a sentence or two that you’ve written, that’s the perfect place to go!
Here, I’m going to be writing some longer, more general explanations for the most common mistakes that people make and give you some info on how you can fix your grammar!
This is one of the most common mistakes people make when writing online. So let me clear it up for you!
Unless you are talking about names or other nouns, the apostrophe (’) is usually there to tell you that there is a letter or two missing.
That’s the main clue to help you separate them properly! “You’re” is telling you that there is a letter missing!
You’re
You’re is short for “you are”. If you can replace the word “you’re” with “you are”, and the sentence still makes sense, then it’s this one you should be using. For example: “ you’re funny” or “ you’re my best friend”.
Your
“Your” is a possessive word. That means you use it when you’re talking about what the person you’re talking to owns. For example: “ your boyfriend” or “ your name”.
Hmmm. I’d say get some English as a Foreign Language books. That might sound a bit beneath a lot of people, but foreigners tend to have to understand a lot more grammar to speak English than naive speakers do! I actually learnt a lot about grammar when I became a TEFL teacher be because of that.
I suggest the English Grammar In Use collection. If you know basic stuff, you might be able to skip the red book Essential Grammar in Use. They’re full of exercises and answers to help you understand and learn grammar points as they come up!
