The Hate U Give - Discussion

This is a discussion thread on the book “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas. Here’s a quick description acquired from Good Reads:

"Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life."

Here are a few questions to get you started and dicuss on the book!

  1. Did you enjoy it?
  2. Did it have an impact on you?
  3. Did you find it to be accurate?
  4. Your opinions on the book?
  5. Anything else you’d want to share about the book?

I didn’t know there was a book. I’ve never watched the movie although, I have seen snippets of it. I’m going to see if I can buy the book then give it a read

Oh my God, I absolutely loveddd this book! It was eye-opening and incredible and insightful and just ahhh mastery.

It did, it made me cry a lot. And I think it was the beginning of me caring a lot more about Black issues than I used to—even though I am Black.

I wish it wasn’t, but it is.

Incredible. I loved it. It was a bit slow for me in parts, but the overall message was clear as day and it was a book that needed to be written.

You have to read it. It’s sooo good.
Also, I didn’t know all that stuff they were saying about Tupac, he seemed like a really cool dude. Like him saying THUG LIFE means The Hate U Give F-cks Little Infants. The movie did a really good job of encompassing that at the climax holy crap

The book, in my opinion, is better than the movie. Being as white as a tissue, I know how people with a different race can be treated differently and I don’t think it’s fair. The hate u give (the book) really gave me some more perspective, and it hadn’t really occured to me that stuff that horrible still occured (this was last year, by the way). Reading more and more into it, we humans are just as barbaric as we were before, just in a more subtle way.

As a white person, we cannot condone the actions of other, racist, white people around the world. It isn’t fair, and no one asked to be the colour they were. The phase, in my opinion, “I don’t see colour” is kinda dumb, in my opinion. It should be: I DO see colour, and I acknowledge how POC are being treated, and we need to do something. My hope is that, racism will soon end. I believe that the world will be a better place for everyone.
